what's this noise!?

Hello,

On my way home from Ipswich last week (Ipswich to Leeds) I was just about two miles away from home when my 2.5 N/A 90 developed a kind of odd sounding high pitch tappety rattling sound, almost like someone with a strip of tin can attached to their bike wheel to make that horrible motorbike sound effect. My first thought was that this noise was something in the engine but I have since changed my mind. The engine runs and ticks over fine when the vehicle is stationary. The sound is apparent when the vehicle is coasting, more audible from a cold start (it seams) and still occurs when my clutch is fully pressed. I've looked high and low for the problem but can't figure out what it is! The UJ's don't seem to really have any play in them, only a very tiny little bit (how do I check them properly?) and there's nothing catching anywhere. The noise can also be heard pretty much any time that the landy is moving forwards (dont know about backwards) and it starts from a very low speed!

Any help, thoughts or opinions please?
Oh, and if I quickly come off the gas so that the drive train kind of jolts, it is really loud!

Yes, a horrid old rusty metal one (now you've got me thinking!) why??? It can only be catching, can it!!?? It doesn't sound like that though!

Was going to say, I'd be able to hear it all the time! I think its my UJ's, hoping so, how do I check them absolutely properly?

do you still have all gears? (inc hi, lo and diff) could be transfer box, diffs, cv joints drain the oils and check them for swarf and replace them with fresh gear oils (atf in the 'box ep90 or equivalent in axles/transfer) to check your ujs grip the prop near the joint push the joint up down left right and back and forth no play should be felt (you can get away with a little)

The only thing ah can think of just now is the uj's first, then the bits the uj's connect to.. ie the diffs and t/box. After that ah'm not sure at this moment in time

The gearbox oils have been changed recently and the axles oils are something that I keep meaning to do but keep putting off. My front prop does seem to kind of move back a long way, as in, there's a lot of movement back up towards the gear box if I push it that way, that can't be good then! New prop does ye reckons?

Ye could take yer props off and see if the ends flop about and have quite a bit of play... grab the shaft and give the ends a good twiddle from side to side etc. Any roughness or freeplay then it's time fur a change IMO

Stick some grease in the prop first and see what it does from there

Oh, If ye do take yer props off then check if ye've got any play in the shaft

I suppose the best way to check wheel bearings is to jack the front end up and then spin the wheels as quick as I can? I'll check everything thoroughly again tomorrow!

Jack the front up and then grab it at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and give it a wiggle to check for play.. give it a spin... then do the same at 3 and 9 o'clock ad then give it it a wiggle again. If there's a wee bit of play, try checkin' yer preloads etc

Come to think of it, that was the one thing that the mechanic wrote on my MOT sheet, just some advice that the wheel bearings needed tightening on one side. I'll get onto it! Cheers

wheel bearings normaly give a low grumble when they go so i would think its not your noise, thinking about it i recon its yer 'box end uj lerrus know how yer get on
