Evenin all!

Been out for a long run in my 90 today, 1st one since the 300 was fitted!

Loved the power, temperature stayed fine, passenger side didn't get really hot, for reference!

However... When the engine had been going for a while, and was really up to temperature, it developed a rattle. It sounds tappety, and am going to check those next week when i have chance, but are there any other thoughts?

It only did it at higher revs, but was quite loud, and sounded really aweful on the overrun, again only at higher revs (50+MPH)

Am i being paranoid, is it gonna be the tappet clearance (i thought these engines had hydraulic ones?) or is ot summin else?

Oh, in case anyone is asking, get a TDi over the NA :D and the get insured with footman james, they didn't want any more money off me! Well chuffed.

Ta all!

Could be tappets, easy to check. I'm assuming it's a Disco engine and you've mated it to your existing LT77 box? Bear in mind that means it'll be sitting a lot further back in the engine bay than a factory 300 Tdi and that Tdis are significantly louder than the NA diesel as they're direct injection.

The first thing I'd check is there isn't too much oil in it!

Damn your good... :D
It is a disco engine, and its on my lt77 box too.

Didn realise that they were louder though, thought the opposite was true!

THere was too much oil in it when i bought it, there isnt now though it keeps falling out.

Tappets are to be checked soon, but i think that im gonna need a new breather pipe cos the current one is taped together. Joy...

Which exhaust downpipe from the turbo are you using and is it bracketed to the side of the block below the turbo?

When the bracket broke on mine it would slap the side of the block at high(ish) revs and sounded like a midget with a jackhammer.

If it had too much in it when you bought it - have you not changed it an the filter since? Bearing in mind it's only a few quid for the filter and some oil it's probably a good idea ;)

I am using the disco downpipe, de-catted and modded to fit. There was no braket fitted, should there be one?

I havnt changed the oil yet, honestly havn't had time! It is on the agenda, probably when i do the tappets. The old owner used castrol magnatec, and some funny oil additive. Great...

Don't know about the disco engines in a disco but the downpipe in a 90 is very close to the block and can, at least the stock one can, tap the block - hence the bracket.

If there's no holes tapped for the bolts that hold the bracket on then I dunno what you'd do... let me know if you want pics of the bracket position on mine.

Cheers,

pics would be very good please! Ill go and investigate when i get the chance.
Should be able to get them done tomorrow evening.

Why would this only be apparent when it was hot though?
Err... good point! Answer is... it's probably not this that's causing yer tapping noise

Did you have the exhaust manifold off when you installed it? If you did, did you use a new gasket when refitting it?

Worth checking the water pump bearing while you're at the alternator - that'll give an intermittent tick if its gone good and proper, although they usually gush coolant out of the front by the time the impeller is fouling the housing ;)

ill give them a feel. According to halfords wee machine the battery and alternator are working ok, and my battery gauge says to also. I think thats a poor connection somewhere, but even so i will check it out! ta for your thoughts!
