The correct Land Rover fluid is green which is a good quick check. Don’t recall it being expensive.
Assuming a F2 from your signature, you need to use the correct spec fluid - CHF202. You can easily cause damage to the power steering pump otherwise.
Edit; And be sure to bleed it correctly if required - before starting it. They are very prone to damage caused by air in the system!
Have a look in this thread - covers a lot of it for you, with pics courtesy of @Arctic2.Freddie, thanks - think I will just call into JLR on the way to work tomorrow if they are open and grab some oil
Where would be the best place in the car to bleed it from?
That is the only way to do it in my opinion, wheels only have to be off the ground by a few inches, so easy to do, also if i were the OP i would be changing the power steering reservoir at the same time. Not sure if this is the recommended way to do it. But I would jack up the front of the car and turn the steering lock to lock a few times without the engine running. once you are happy that the level is not going down, then that should be the air out of the system

The reservoir has a filter in it that can get clogged over time.Great thank you - why would you recommend changing the reservoir too?
Because there is a filter built into the reservoir which can not get changed, and they need changing every couple of years or so, i doubt yours as ever been changed or as it? and it's best way to bleed the system.Great thank you - why would you recommend changing the reservoir too?
Nodge68Bog standard ATF. . . . . . but I used my crystal ball for what Freelander you have !!
RAVE says this:

Completely wrong information for the FL2.
DON'T USE ATF.
The correct fluid is CHF202, which is the only specification fluid to go in the FL2 PS system.
Standard ATF will destroy the pump and rack seals.
Must admit, I only worked it out after double-checking and spotting the OP’s signature !Didn't know it was an FL2 when I posted. Will delete my post !!
Good point, I don’t understand why FL1’s are on the same section of the forum as the FL2’s. They are not even similar (BMW vs Ford) although they do both have four wheels and an engine.Didn't know it was an FL2 when I posted. Will delete my post !!
