My crazy diff ratio change idea

LPG is very well supported in France, which he'll be driving through at 130 kph, I assume. And I was also wondering how these cars are built if the diff casings are worrying him? Presumably not beam axle.

I have said many times that I am not concerned about fuel cost. I am also not concerned about the casings of the diff. I just mentioned those things as minor bonuses in changing the diffs.

Why would I spend a few thousand on an LPG system and slightly bigger tires (as was suggested) for something that isn't that important to me, when I can just spend £200 on alternative differentials?

Am I crazy to make that statement?

Or is the suggestion crazy?

Do not solve your RPM concerns, spend several thousand pounds on something you don't want, or do your original idea...

Like I said, you people throw out insults but you don't have any facts.

Literally telling me that the gearbox will not go into fifth gear when it has a manual function that can be moved into fifth gear.

But then finding it offensive when I pointed out this fact to you...

Any decent person would just say "Oh yeah I forgot about that, you are right."

Or they would give me factual reason reasons why it would not go into fifth gear despite it being selected.

But given that I can put it into fifth gear quite easily just driving around town I cannot imagine that it would struggle at 70mph.

Oh FYI, my trip is Belgium, German, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal. Barely touching France on the way to Belgium and from Italy to Spain. But hey, why not take out my spare tire from my spare tire space to put in an LPG tank in order to save money that I don't care about and not solve my actual problem being the RPM level?

Buy ONE diff and fit it, just to see if you can.
If you can, buy another, fit it then try it out, mixed driving and so on.
I'll not mention brim-to-brim testing as you don't care about fuel.

Obviously I can buy one diff. Just going off pictures they seem to be identical in the mounting points. The only reason I came here to ask the question was I thought that would be a much simpler solution as somebody might know the answer.

I work on my car on the street outside of my house on a hill and it is not easy for me to do stuff to the car, so it would be far easier to get the answer to my simple question rather than spending time under my car for nothing.

My car has the NV225 transfer box which is very rare and there aren't any alternative parts for it that I can find. There is an option to get a different fifth gear from a BMW ZF5 gearbox but that would involve removing the gearbox which is a complicated task on the street!

The easiest solution is the one that I have proposed here after looking in detail at all of the options, and all I really need to know is will the 2.76 diff fit in my car.

I also wanted to know if there was anything that I had not thought of, but so far no one has said anything that I did not think of, and cannot be solved immediately and easily.

This has been a hilarious experience, and while I have laughed at many comments on here from people who don't know anything over the past year of reading this forum, I had no idea it would be even more funny to be in the middle of that process.

I don't even know if I will do this modification, it was just an idea for some point in the future when I make the trip.

And I speak with a little experience as I regularly tow a car on a trailer with my D2 TD5 auto, (from the UK to south west France) so I do know a bit about how easily a LR product drives. And yes, I do try to save fuel and do not drive on the normal speed limit, as that would be stoopid quite apart from illegal.

I looked on gentlemen of salvage and they have multiple pictures of diffs from many different angles and all of the mounting points look exactly the same.

I just thought to make sure I could ask the question here and get the answer.

Just realised that if the vehicle doesn't have a beam axle then the halfshafts will presumably be mounted on flanges or something, you can tell I do not know the L322 at all!

It all looks easy and identical from photos and I cannot see why LR would change the drive train for one diff version only. But why take the risk when I can ask the forum? Oooops.

L322 rear Diff upgrade/replacement Advise please

Hi all, it's been a couple of years since I last visited the Landy Zone ( I've been blessed with trouble free motoring ) Until now!!! I have a noisy rear diff that's vibrating and is probably on it's way out( covered 160k miles) My question is 3 fold as a brand new unit is around a grand. No1...

My L322 is just like my ex-wife. Looks great, but cost me money all the time, and there is always something wrong with it. And no sex. Plus she has a huge rear end, being the "full fat" version. And there are newer models of the same car that do more with less drama. I swapped my ex-wife for a car...

I have never said, I know how to, or its a stupid idea. But then I am not a novice mechanically. Many here are in the same boat, some even do it for a living.
I asked you for what car they were fitted, cos my documented eveidence doesnt match.Yes I have seen them for sale and they only seem to fit years 2010-2013, now they could well be the same passed that but that was when the L322 became L405 so it could well be the same.

When ever I try to find diff/driveshaft parts they seem to cut off at 2007/2009, then go 2010-2013, which tells me there is a high/med risk that they are not just a straight swap, Or other parts would be needed.

The best I can offer is you ask the guys selling if they could get you some good side by side pics of each year. But even then there is no garuantee they are the same internal fixings.

I was tring to learn a bit myself and maybe help you/somebody else in the future.

I am also now going to have to get My 2011 TDV8 8speed over my pit sometime and check this ratio thing first hand.
I will be checking front and back, but I cannot believe anybody is stupid enough to put a different ratio in only the rear.

So as many posters of threads on here maybe you didnt give the right info in your responces to the initial questions.
There will always be help from many members with experience here even if they dont know they will try to help work it out. Most accept that everyday can be a school day.

See the thing is we are now 2 days in and I dont see anything you have done to help yourself (on both threads you have running).

So if you want to continue just watching then thats up to you. If you want to fight everybody cos they didnt read your first post correctly then why put info in that is not relevant?

You have stated the concerns that I have that brought me here to ask the question.

I don't understand what value there is in stating something that is clearly already implied in my question.

I did laugh though when someone told me to buy a different car after my initial comment said to not tell me to buy a different car.

This has been a hilarious experience for me and the only reason that I have continued to comment here is because of how much fun it has been laughing at people who know nothing acting like they know everything.
