£11,000 insurance quote on a 1991 Defender 90

Hi everyone. I bought an MOT failed Defender 90 a year or so back (H reg - 1991 - 200TDI) that my 17 yr old son and I have just "re-chassied" (new brakes, suspension, chassis etc) and it should be on the road by the end of the month. I've rung up a few insurance sites (Adrian Flux, Lancaster, Peter James) and the best quote I got for my 17 yr old son was £11,000 (eleven!!). (No previous criminal record / no driving offences / nothing.). Does anyone have any names of any other insurance brokers / companies I could try please? Many thanks.

Try A Plan.
Its gonna be expensive for any 17yr old but that sounds ridiculous.

Have you treid you as main with named driver, there are restrictions but it could get him on the ladder.

Can't do that, as a youngster it will need to be insured in his name as the main driver.
My son was 17 when he insured his Ninety through AF.
I doubt A-plan will insure, I'm in my 50s and they don't qoute me a sensible price.
AF are probably your only choice, was for us, but I have no idea what you have told them to make it that expensive.

Strange how things can be reversed.
AF didnt have a clue about my 630R, But A Plan understood and agreed value I even upped it on a renewal no issue.

I am sure you can still do named drivers, but as I said there maybe restritions, dont know been out of the UK for a while.

You can do named drivers BUT if the youngster is the MAIN driver then he can't be a NAMED driver, if that makes sense. They got wise to that years ago.

Yep, got to start somewhere, along as he is not the main driver. Also a possible downside is not earning any no claims bonus, maybe.

Yep totally agree.
Being young these days is not easy, oh hang on .

Still think the quote is way over expected.

Did you tell the insurance bods that you had fitted new brakes, suspension, chassis etc ?

If so, try again without saying anything about new parts you have fitted.... it's a "standard" Landrover 90 Defender.

Yes, don't tell them anything except know mods which you need to declare.
My son's was £2.5k for a Ninety with a 200tdi conversion, mind you that was 10 years ago. Still agree £11k seems rather high.

Insurance costs are mental for young drivers, the young lad at work was quoted 10k for a fiesta. Have you added a black box as this brings it down a fair bit. (he wont want one fitted lol)
