hello from canada everyone, im a 17 year old looking to embark on a pretty ambitious project. my grandfather has a whole fleet of old land rovers on his property, and after giving them a comb through i came across a pretty beat up 101 FC. Restoring it is something i’d love to do, but i have nowhere to start. any advice would be very appreciated

Welcome to rummaging through nuts and bolts for the prophecy. That will be a big job to start with as a beginner. Drop a few photos for the military types here to drool over and hopefully they poured over and offer some advice.

Do you have tools? Can you weld? Have you messed about with vehicles before?

What sort of condition is it in? Original and replacement parts are available to an extent, but you may have to order over the internet and ship to Canada. It could get pricey, but likely no worse than me buying bits for my Camaro in the USA and having them shipped to the UK.

You might be able to 'fix' many bits anyway. You may not need parts, e.g. you could patch up or even fabricate bits for the chassis. Body panels should be Birmabright, but they are all flat, so you could just get aluminium bits cut out to shape.

So it really depends on many many things.

If you aren't after a high fidelity restoration, you could look at putting a coil chassis under it. A Discovery 1/RRC (or likely even a Disco 2) could be candidates. The D1/RRC have certainly been done. Either stick with the 3.5 Rover V8, parts should be easy to get in the USA still and I daresay Canada. Or you could fit a latter 3.9, 4.0, 4.6 Rover V8 or even something like a Tdi without too much hassle.

I'm not a phenomenal welder but my buddies who are gonna help out certainly are, so I think that's covered. I come from a long line of tool addicts so there probably isn't anything I don't have access to. The condition isn't too too bad from what i can tell, it was running fine before being parked for the last time a few years ago so everything is still more or less where its supposed to be
