Had to be recovered half way accross the country last night as the car started leaking flud all over the place, and despite the RAC's best efforts some 20miles further on we came to a halt the second time hence needing full recovery.

She drove ok, but lost complete transmission control and gradualy slowed from 60 to 20mph; further inspection revealed the toped up transmission fluid all over the road!

Any ideas what this might be? I noticed that an hour or so before we lost power the first time (meant to be a 6hr journey) the car "coughed" a few times, from underneath; no rev chance or speed change or even gear change but a jerky cough, which it did a hand hull of times untill we lost power; might the two be connected?

Ta in advance,

Have you identified the source of the leak yet?

I'll be honnest I have not; since getting back at 3am it was straight to bed and then work work work!! From looking at the pattern of the leak its on the undercarrage near the front middle of the car, around the front seat area; we put 3l of fluid in when we first stoped.

hmmm, there should be like a protection undertray on the underneath that shields the underside of the gearbox from debris and stuff. If your leak was coming from the bottom of the box then this undertray may have the fluid leaking onto it and it then channeling along the undertray and leaking out further up or further back from the actualy leak.

If you opent he bonnet and stand on the passenger side and look down towards the back you should be able to see a good view of the back of the engine, can you see any leaks there?? If not then you may want to get the vehicle up on a ramp or over a pit, remove the undertray and see what you find then.

It isnt leaking out from the gearbox breather tube is it?? This will be on the passenger side just at the back of the engine.
