Does the dash display show the correct gear selection?

Any leaks in the gearbox pipe system, rad or around the box sump?

I think, from memory that 1st & reverse are selected mechanically, the remaining gears electronically.

Dashboard lights show gear selection correctly,oil level correct etc.

I am told by a friend that he had the same problem with his mercedes and it was a module in the gearbox,anyone know if the P38 is the same system

There is no module that I'm aware of the the P38 gearbox. I take it the oil level was checked when the gearbox was cold, engine idling and after going through all the gears?
If the XYZ switch is working as indicate by the dash display and assuming there is enough oil in the box, I'd be looking at the ECU with diagnostics, the cabling and the connectors.

Diagnostics might help before digging into wiring !!
