Help Me Landy Sounds Like I've Left A Spanner In It!

well had me new exhaust put on on friday, went away with the caravan at the weekend, an apart from the ****e weather not a bad time at all, good beer an good company.

all was fine till on the way home today i started to hear a strange noise more when i turned to the left, almost like a ping pong ball or a stone stuck in ya tires but alot faster, it got worse so i pulled up, had a good look around an decided to carry on, after stopping it stopped, but now its back with avengence
my first instinct says its the rear diff its coming from the back, but i'm not sure took off the rear wheels an checked the brakes a wheel bearings,
only thing i noticed was the diff seemed noisy and there was about an inch of play from one direction to the other, but not sure if thats normal or not, but it was smooth turning but sounded a bit (slappy) well couldn't think of a better word sorry.
now i've put a bit of oil in the diff, not much though and the old oil was a slight bit grey but not bad at all. now it sounds like something is grating in the back end.

You haven't got a stone caught between a disc and it's dust guard have you? Also check your wheel bearings and drive flanges for wear/slack.

definatly not a stone as i've had the wheels off an its got worse,
but as for drive flanges will go an read up on those.
it sounds like a grating now more noticeable at lower speed

Rear prop , did you say you were vanning that would do it , it did my front one and then after the replacment did the back one , a noise like a midget with a hammer , see how much play here is and replace the thing also if any grease has escaped, BETCHA THATS IT.

nice one mate took it to a mate at the bottom of the street he says its the wheel bearing, so went to paddoks to get a set an they goin on 2moro, but thinking about it i did notice a bit of a whine when i took a corner to the left a bit fast, but the local garage said it was nothing to worry about (BASTIDS)
i'll let you know if it works

not loose wheel nuts wish it were wunt cost owt then
had all 4 off yesterday an cu nt find owt wrong, tourqed em up to 110 nm,
but when i took it out this mornin it sounded like a load of spanners runnin round in me wheels

As far as i remember all 4 wheel bearings wont go at the same time.. before you do this get the props checked out its an easy job for somone who knows what they are looking at.and it does sound quite similar to a wheel problem, as the noise comes up from underneath. The extra stress put on the props from towing could do one or both and . if the wheel bearings gone there are normally a few good ways to tell 1. The actual alloy gets hot(ter) 2. wheel feels loose. As far as the prop goes the car at 55 ish will feel like it needs tracking in my experiance. Its normally the prop shaft UJ that goes under pressure there are little clips that hold it on and theses tinkle tankle away.
Whichever one it is keep us info'd and good luck mate.

Another way to detect very loose or knackered wheel bearings is a lot of travel with the first push of the brake pedal. As you drive the brake disc does not run true and slow pushes the pads/pistons back into the calliper, the first push of the brake pedal just takes moves the pads back to the discs and this shows up as long pedal travel!

The second push of the pedal applies the brakes in the normal manner.

No effect on handbrake as it is on the prop.

just hope the stub axle is ok



and the vibration when you turn the wheels (car on jack) is only comin from one side

Thats the good thing about forums and this one is one of the best, you cannot beat experience. You was rightly concerned about the stub axle the track can weld itself to the stub in a very short while.

If the inner race is stuck on there use a very small angle grinder (goggles) and slowly cut a line into the track being careful not to cut into the stub, this should release the tension and a tap with a chisel and hammer into the groove you have cut should free it.

It's best not to get into trying to drive a chisel between the bearing carrier and the stub axle as this may damage to the surface where the oil/grease seal runs and cause leaks at a later date.

I am pretty sure the stub axle can be removed fromm the axle and replaced quite easily, perhaps someone with a little more knowledge on the forum can help out?

yes it can dave, was in the same boat about 2 years ago where the inner race had welded itself to the stub axle. ten min the job to change the lot.

And me ,......angle grinder and an oh so delicate (for a disco) touch moved the bugger but i was sweating.

thanx lads got my mate to sort it for me, i've had no time fa owt lately
it was the outter bearing it was dry of greese and full of water must be something to do with the ford at tissington last weekend


sounds much better so smooth an quiet, an got my mate to do the diff oil seal while he was at it, 75 quid the lot an i din,t even get me hands mucky

MOT is due on tuesday hope it passes
gonna give it a clean and good check over 2day
