I would just like to say

...that I have to go to my son's to help fit a new toilet flush mechanism with an internal overflow.
The existing one has external overflow and when the ball-valve failed it overflowed but the pipe was just not connected to anything (previous house owner) which just ruined the room below it.
Herself wants me back here pronto to pull all the dead leaves off the huge cordyline in the front garden.
Busy, Busy, Busy.

No idea, they just fitted a new valve and it never stopped dripping, I said "If it has an overflow...so what?".
Their overflow was connected to nothing and they did not monitor it, so they got a mess.

I used to be...... since becoming disabled, the contact has dried up somewhat!

The work should definitely dry up, but not the contact. Dad's can still advise even if they don't "DO".

I was thinking "How can such a practical Dad have such an unpractical son?" Then I thought about my own dad.
He once complained that his new washing machine that had been fitted by the bloke who delivered it was always "hopping around the kitchen." He even had to limit his washing cycles to ones that didn't do this.
When he died this machine was one thing I brought home with me, thinking I could fix it and use it as it was still pretty new.
I expect you are ahead of me, but, yes. It still had the steadying tie fitted in the top to stop the drum from banging around in transport. The "fitter" had never removed it.
My impractical dad had never even looked at the manual. Once removed it ran like clockwork.
He had about 5 tools 4 of which were for painting and decorating which he actually was good at!
What I did with cars always amazed him.
Genes are funny things. (My practical ones came through my mum and all my grandparents, I think)
Anyway, glad you sorted it!!!

Don't worry about this. We all take the p!ss out of each other over this and I am one of the older ones! age gives experience and helps when it comes to fixing old skool stuff. (and providing humorous interludes!)
But we need young'uns to help with new stuff like feckin electronix, which baffle the bollix off me!

They only call when something has gone wrong. I suppose I still get asked to fund a fix if I can't do the work!
