Post about casting problems on britpart swivels, can't find it..

For I have just discovered I have the same problem as the poster and thread that I can't find. Basically, not enough of the casting inside the ball has been ground away resulting in very little steering lock.
Annoyingly I did look at the new balls and saw that they were ground away so I built them up not realising I had the issue.
The post would be interesting to read for any tips etc but I can't find it.

Yes, I had to grind mine out a bit to prevent the CV joint binding. The swivel balls were OK, but it appeared that the tool used to machine out the insides could have done with being inserted a few more millimetres. I tried a Dremel (well, actually ours is a Draper, but it's the same sort of thing), but it wasn't really up to the job so I bought a die grinder and a few tungsten carbide burrs and that made short work of it.

Mine weren't Britpart, come to think of it. There seem to have been a batch of them floating around a coupler of years ago sold as various makes. Somebody set the stop on the capstan lathe about 8mm too far away from the headstock and let it run all day before anyone noticed there was anything wrong.

Old and new swivel balls.lots of extra meat left on the new one.found an air die grinder that I forgot I had, must of got that 30 years ago. 5 mins with that took a bit off so I reassembled to test and full lock is restored

Yes, those look very like the swivels I had, with a black finish and thick walls. Comparing the old and new you can see that the bit of machining extends further inside the ball and is taken out to a larger diameter on the old one. On mine it was the bottom that was fouling; I didn't need to take any off the top.
