Never seen one part like that, but they knock on rough road surfaces when worn.
Still think you should check the vcu clunk as above. Looks like the vehicle is lacking in maintenance so check everything!!
Ok, think I may have found culprit.
To my shame I do not know what this is called. Next to the right wheel. It is intact on the other side, with the boot intact too. When I found it it seemed to be half in half out. I think as I was turning wheel it was disengaging then re-engaging. Hell of a noise for a small component though. Please tell me what it is, and by all means mock me while doing so.View attachment 247256
Hi, as others have said it's a droplink. I had a set fail in under a 1,000 miles so I got Lemforder ones (or you can get genuine) & they've been trouble free for about 10,000 so far.

Thanks. Quite relieved to have identified the source. Given the noise I thought it was going to be something fairly major. Still, give it time. I'm getting more used now to things going wrong. I've just done the callipers both sides at the front after both of them seized. One I swapped complete, the other I managed to pop the piston and replace the seals. No sooner had I done that then this clunking kicked in. It will be something else soon.

I whipped a replacement off my donor vehicle and it's cured it. Think I will get a new set in though. I'm still surprised it could cause all the noise. 17mm and 19mm socket/spanners if anyone interested. Thanks very much for the help.
