Hi I am brand new to this site.
I have a 1985 3 door 110 with a 2.5 petrol engine and i have just purchased a 200TDI out of a 1992 Discovery with all the bits IE rads, intercooler, all ansilerys, infact im told I have the complete set of everything to do the job but me being an old sceptic thought Id give you land rover blokes a go and see what you all come up with and hopefuly I can convert my old lady with the minimum of fuss.:) Ok fire away

Deffinitely can be done but a bit of a faff what with having to change all the fuelling system, diesel returns etc, also wiring in glow plugs, new temp gauges, ignition system etc - not as easy as a diesel conversion but will be most interested to see how it progresses! Good luck and welcome to LZ!

My 90 was petrol, its now got a 2.5N/A lump in it, the only difference between this swap and the swap your going to do is there is a bit more in the engine bay but the connections to the electrics is the same. For the glows you can take a wire into the dash and install a button directly opposite the ignition switch which can switch a 60-70 amp relay on the bulkhead, this means the glow plugs can be installed with minimal fuss, and to be honest the 200tdi rarely needs them so it lets you pick and choose when you need them. I have this set up, first thing I can give it a blast then once its been on for a reasonable time thats me for the rest of the time, but the disco you still have the 5-6second glow period every time.

The injection pump just needs an ignition live to hold the solenoid open you can probably utilise something from the dissy feed.

Take the temp sender out of the petrol and put that into the 200tdi then you can keep your guage (just remember for the future if you ever need a new sender to get the one for a 2.5Petrol).

Fuel lines, not too bad really, just run a return and change the filter assy.

Given the price of diesel these days you might be better installing LPG?? Although the TDI is a good motor although the petrol engines are smooth and a lot quieter.

Just my thoughts although I run a 300tdi

Have you thought about the gearing?
A diesel will be happy on the motorway at 3500 rpm and flat out at 4000 but what speed is 3500 from your petrol engine ?
My V8 is doing about 65 at 3500 and the engine will easy rev to 6500+ (it's modified) but put a diesel in and top speed would be barely 70 with the engine screaming for mercy

Well done, Discomania this is just what I wanted to hear, Im now looking forward to doing this engine swap, thanks again

hi Landowner, yes I have thought about the gearing and because these TDI pull like a train I think for the higher top speed and good fuel economy could be acheived very easily by having bigger wheels, I know this would put the speedo out but a small price to pay I think, What do you think land owner?

I'm thinking of converting but the diesel engine will only give me a comfortable cruising speed of about 55mph at 3000rpm at which speed the motor will use a lot of juice.
I need to up the gearing by I think using a diesel box with a higher output speed but I'm not sure.
Bigger wheels will only increase speed by about 10 to 15 percent at most which isn't enough.
we need some imput from the experts I think.:(
