when i take my van for its mot the examiner asks me to turn on my fog lights,
its the only time that they are used one year to the next,
you're supposed to turn on your rear fogs as soon as the forecast suggests there may be a chance of mist o_O at least that seems to be the rule most folks follow

thats why they are there but the reason i dont use them is i dont drive that much in the van,
on my series i have the sidelights on most of the time,

I think fog lights should be a one switch affair, ie main lights on then you can turn fogs on, then when main lights turned off the fogs auto reset to off, so the idiots have to switch them on each time, that way no excsues like I left them on by mistake etc.
I assume some cars must be like this already?

I believe the P38 is. It certainly resets when the ignition is turned off.

I don't think I have ever used the front fogs in anger. I've used the rears a few times when I have dropped into an absolute pea-souper.

DVSA or VOSA as it was known when I was an authorized examiner have a history of making bizarre decisions. One such was stopping testing stations failing knackered brake discs unless they were literally hanging off! Their reasoning was garages were failing too many brake discs in order to make money out of replacing them. While I am sure this happened at a small minority of stations it was not the norm. As I argued with them at the time they are meant to be looking after safety issues not the revenue of garages, that is the trading standards job. However a car would pass if only one out of five wheel nuts were fitted and they were covered with a hub cap . The same for rotted out sills if covered by body kits. Most modern cars are now covered full length underneath with plastic so anything covered cannot be inspected.

I only turn my front fogs on a few times per year on deserted roads to dry out the condensation!
D3 fogs are on the rotary light swicth so lights off fogs off every time.
Some trucks are like this yet others if fogs left on from last time come on again.

Tbh I think mot standards have slipped a long way over the last few years cars and trucks.
That is why when I see a car failing mots mot year after year I think wow.

If I am honest I have probably used my rear fogs less than a handful of times in the past few years.

As for front fogs I personally don’t see the point, I get that they are lower so you get less reflection back from the main lights but I haven’t seen fog like that for a long time and in less than the absolute worst conditions they don’t actually add anything IMO.

I believe my MX5 is like that. Can only turn on when headlights are on and do know they go off when headlight is turned off

To be fair, mot stations do like to fail on brake disks these days. Years ago, the ratio of pads to disks was about 6 to 1. 6 sets of pads changed to every I disk but now it's more like 3 to 1. There was a garage near here who failed our old Peugeot on its front disks a year after they had changed them, the car had only done 8k in that time.
