...that the lathe of despair rumbles on.
Here it is with the newly-painted back panel re-fitted and with a new wedge-style quick-change post fitted.
I have attempted to remove the backlash on the cross-slide and I am down from 20 thou' to 4 thou' so I need to try harder I know.
Allegedly, some tool-holders to match will turn up tomorrow, which would be nice and then I might be able to turn a custom "backlash removal" washer.
Chinese-lathe haters may now (of course) form an orderly queue and apply their hoots of derision as they see fit.
I am reconciled to the fact that it is a "Toy" and that I am merely dabbling in machining, so I will not be all that offended.

I was reading summit the other day about a bloke who bought a cheap one and he had loads of issues with it and was ready to send it back.

Yeah, lathe ownership can be stressful

Thank you. This was my initial take on things. I do have something to start having some fun with. It may not be the best-of-breed but it is more than I have ever had before.

I read that too! Apparently, he pulled his finger out and fixed it up good & proper so it was probably worth keeping.

Nah it's a German one from Siemens mid 90's but the Motor is Chinese.

I started out on a Colchester Junior in the mid eighties with my dear teacher an mentor Ted Chekoniak (spelling iffy) an then we got some Triumph 2000 machines too. All NC an very satisfying to use, as were the Bridport manual mills we had.
There was no proper training, all on the job, an you got to get a feel for it.. Ace.
My next outfit had some cnc units with LX2 programming. The programming was interesting as was watching them run, but it had no soul. Ergo I don't remember the make or type. Good bloke was Ted.
