Diff Lock?!?!

ive got an owners manual - and ive used diff locks on other vechiels and on the range rover the same age as this. . .ive been underneath and got pics :)

so we 100% ive got a diff lock, but its not working - correct?

now the stick is half way from the center postion and the middle position - my mind says its ****in bent now - because it still only goes back and forward - no light coming on the dash

please tell me whats in these pics from underneath

is the large metal bit meant to move when "DIFF LOCK" is engaged? the bit in the middle at the top moves when HIGH or LOW is selected?

I'd suggest anyone who's not sure how all this stuff works get hold of an owners manual for their particular vehicle. It explains it all very clearly.
Hey Hubbert it makes you wonder if the bloke you bought yours off didn't know how the gearbox works what other bull**** did he tell you:eek:

:D Well the bloke that sold me it certainly didn't know much about it, but I think I've been lucky with the car despite that. I've asked him to send me a manual, but he's been stalling, so I guess I'll just get one from somewhere else.

Still, I have now figured it out, so thanks fellas.

And Snow... yeah, it's definitely supposed to shift 3" to the left! :D

what year is urs 95? think there all the same arnt they? do you move it when in high or low acros to the left and was this really really stiff????
 
You should be able to engage the centre diff lock in high or low and without stopping the vehicle, just push the lever over and the orange light should come on. You shouldn't engage it while the wheels are spinning apparently.
 
You will have difflock on yours definatly,the rangerover transfer box has only high - neutral - low as the difflock is automatic as in a viscous coupling.yours has manual difflock as said before and looking at the pics you've got a bit of freeing off to do there!

Mine glides backwards and forwards with the gentle push of a finger, no problem. Others have had the same problem with it getting stuck through lack of use.

Like Clean said on Page 1 - the ratio selector is just like an old 4-speed gear box with a neutral position: from neutral, left/forward is low lock, left/backwards is high lock, right forward is low no-lock and right/backwards is high no-lock.

And as James said, it should probably be alot less stiff if it's used regularly! So give it a work-out!:)

The pics seems to be of a 300Tdi, not a 200Td

As you've established, there would definately have been diff lock in your vehicle. It really does sound like a typical case of seized diff lock linkage. Copious amounts of WD40 on the linkage should sort it out. This happened to my 200Tdi last year after the heavy, wet winter. ASeveral applications and lots of wiggling soon had it sorted.

Some of the early disco 2's didn't have difflock, they had Traction control instead, though the option to have difflock fitted did exist.

its a series 1, but had an engine change and all that boloxs done at 100,000 miles!! dunno why but seems it went up to the newer 300tdi running gear and engine. . .still classed as a 200tdi on all the documents>!>
 
Reet, it's an LT230 alright, and yes it needs freeing up. WD on the linkage might not be enough though. The actual mechanism inside the box is EN19 (BS840M07) silver steel mounted inside an aluminium casting. We all know what happens to steel and aluminium in close contact (think Serbia and it's neighbours). You might have to take the lid off and clean up the top end of the mechanism. Easy job in a Defender as you take the floor and the tunnel out, but in a Disco, rather you than me.

An if one of those Aussie ****s comes on this thread again, ignore the ****s ;)

i cant beleve how many rubbish and crapy post there are from peaple who doint know ****

dicoverys are all the same, auto manual etc, with the exception of a 2002?? ( i think thats the year) TD5 where some stuped pommy barstard of an eegineer decicided to replace the diff lock with a computuor, after a few disco's ended up on there roofs, it was all put back in.

Snow you are on the corrct track, some more WD40 and it should come start to move, ill dive under take some pick and messurements for ya

so . . . am i looking at the box with the shifter coming out, or the center diff box. . which is a breez to take out :) then i can look at that, but the top one!!! naaaaaa il leave that to a pro :)

The transfer box is the ally thing with the drumbrake and the two output shafts. The thing with the bellhousing is the main gearbox. The metal bit sticking up moves forwards and back to select Lo or Hi. It rocks left and right to engage difflock. The top of this needs removing and the components inside freeing up. If this doesn't work you'll need to go the the main part of the box where the lever engages the pin to lock the diff and free that up.

diff lock works fine, its the top box part that Take5 metioned I should take apart, the middle spindel thing is jamed/stuck and is now soakin in WD40 dont worry not submerdged, me and my dad banged it with a mini sledge hammer to get it movin and now trying to free it up properly. . .but hugh thanks to all the advice. .

That's the crap.
I hate to say I (almost) agree with Redhand. When the Discovery 2 came out (about '98 I think, but I'll stand corrected) the diff lock was deleted, to be replaced by Traction Control. The diff lock was not an option (although some could be converted). In 2002 the Discovery was updated, visualy new headlights, but lots of fine tuning under the skin, and the diff lock returned as an option, and later became standard on some specs.
