Problem starting

Got an series 88” body on a shortened 90 chassis & running gear it’s just started letting me down,it goes to start but just click click clicks like it’s a duff battery changed it for new 115amp hr one still doing it,changed starter brand new again still doing it checked and soldered all leads and connectors,still doing it,checked ignition switch bit of burn on connector changed it new again still doing it,someone said check starter relay looked but couldn’t find on only this in pic it’s the one with the writing on but wire doesn’t look thick enough to be starter relay don’t know if any of you guys could tell me or give any advice.atb Ed

Sounds like a bad earth or duff starter solenoid could bridge the solenoid & see if it turns.

Just ran an earth cable from starter to chassis

It starts eventually be all right for a day then let me down at 1am when out shooting in the middle of a field

Id be taking the starter earth wires off & clean/sand an re-fit to start with (no pun intended)

Done that already cleaned all contacts with dremall

Fuse ok. Not loose or dirty.
If you put 12v direct to little wire on starter, does it fire.

Yes starts straight away

Trace the starter wire back to the block connector if there is one and while someone works the key, bend and twist the block and see if it works and work back from there. There may be some modifications in the mix, trace it all the way.

That blue relay is for your indicators.
There may be one of the small black ones that become live for the stater solinoid to work.
As said trace engine loom to connector blocks for bad connection.

Mine is the old one with glass fuses can be a proper monkey with odd electrical faults,

Yep been there... you never want to be stuck in a field late at night whilst lamping,...

I had intermittent starting issues with my 1990 90 last year drove me mad! After a checking all the usual as above I fitted a direct from batt live to the starter solonoid with a spring switch in it. It would work every time even when the key would not.
In the end I traced the fault to be somewhere in the small starter wire from the key to the fuse box starter relay. A live to activate the relay would start it every time. In the end I just fed a new wire from a key live through a pushbutton switch direct to starter. Sorted.

That’s what I’ve done today so if it lets me down again I can hit the switch and it’ll start.
