Hi everyone! I've just started to have a problem with my 2005 TD4 and I was wondering if anyone could help me?

A couple of weeks ago the car suddenly started to run very rough, but mostly intermittently. The engine management light appears in the dash and the power reduces. Once the light goes out it picks up again only for it to come on again and the power drops. It does not go into limp home mode and can still be driven, albeit with lower power, almost like the turbo is being switched on and off.
The problem started after I'd filled up the fuel tank with fresh diesel, with this in mind I serviced the car, making sure I changed the fuel filter in case it had picked up some dirt. Whilst putting the filter assembly back together I noticed the plug in the picture hanging down, I have no idea where it goes and cannot see any loose wires/plugs that it could fit into. It is part of the wiring loom that feeds the pump, it may have nothing to do with why it is not running right but it certainly needs to be put back in its place whatever happens.
I'm slowly running through all possible reasons for the rough running, and smoking problems, but if anyone could help with the loose plug problem that would be great.

Thank you in advance for any help given.

The only thing needing a connection in the rear wheel arch is the fuel pump which I can see plugged in and the abs sensor which is a different plug altogether.

Maybe it is part of a standard loom and this plug is used for other models!?
Can you get the fault codes read as you have had an engine light they will be stored. That will help diagnosis.

Any chance it was duff or watered fuel, or the wrong fuel!!
A check of low pressure fuel pressure would also be helpful.

Thanks for the reply. Not sure about the plug, it was really clean, as if it had just come loose and not been hanging around too long, so not sure, maybe I'll find time at the weekend to investigate further.
A basic code reader I have shows no codes, obviously a decent reader would probably come up with something so that is something else on my list of things to check.
I filled up with fuel from Sainsbury's, as I always do, on a Friday night, drove home, into work Saturday morning and it started with the problem on the way home from work. I had only travelled around 10 miles so not sure if contaminated fuel would work through that fast, it was definitely diesel though. I'm just trying to use the fuel up so I can clean the system again and not waste all my fuel. I'll have a look through all the problem threads and make a list of things to try, the low pressure fuel pump seems to come up quite often so I'll try that first.
Thanks again for the reply

The black Junior Timer plug is for the fuel burning heater dosing pump. If the FBH wasn't fitted, the wiring with the plug on the end is simply left hanging. ;)

Hi, the earth clip that goes in with the fuel filter looks very corroded & ready to snap, I would replace that asap, p.no YPZ000010 £3.83 inc vat, it might be worth doing the female spade connector in the pic. as it connects to it. Have you looked at the intercooler hoses ? as they can cause loss of power & smoking.

Hey thanks guys, mystery solved! My car doesn't have said FBH fitted, or at least not that I can see, so I guess it's just surplus to requirements, I'll tape it up so it doesn't get wet and trip something out.
With regards to the other problem I'll make a list of possible problems and start working through them.
Thanks for your help on identifying the plug!

Thanks, I sorted the earth lead while I was changing the fuel filter, I haven't checked any pipes yet, trying to build a garage at the moment and once that is done I'll be straight on to the Freelander! I will check the intercooler though. Thanks.

I can't quite see the colour of both those wires but here's mine with it connected to the dosing pump for the FBH.

Those are the same colours that are on my plug, but there is definitely no where to plug it in, so I guess it is just part of the loom, but not needed.
Thank you for the photo for confirmation.

Hi Steev68.
You should still have the fuel lines to which the dosing pump is connected to, and the plug connected to it as well.

Thanks Arctic2, time permitting this weekend I'll have a look, looks pretty obvious in your photos though, I'll put some glasses on next time!!
