Hi,

I went out for a drive yesterday in my series 3, I got to one road end and upon trying to turn left the steering wheel turned once to the left from straight and then stopped, most weird, I reversed to make the corner and then carried on. At speed i noticed no ill affects.

When i got home, the left turn into my drove way a similar thing happened, it got so far and then stuck, this time though it released.

Any ideas?

I've not looked under the bonnet yet but i'm suspecting the steering relay or the steering box...

Thanks
Robert

You need to check all steering items, best to get both wheels off the ground and then move every thing by hand feeling for any sticking / rough movement even to the point of disconnecting the rods and trying each item on its own.

thanks, I had planned to get the front wheels lifted, I'll disconnect everything too. thanks for the tip

The only issue with fully lifting the wheels of the ground is all ball joints will not be in their normal position of wear l would just take enough weight off to allow you to move the wheels by hand not have the wheels hanging

Check the steering column top bearing too, it doesn't get much protection from grit and dirt...if it falls apart the wheel will feel a bit looser but the balls will jam.

Bloody good job really!

Not trying to be mean, and of course using hindsight. But don't you reckon it would have been common sense to have had a look over the vehicle before continuing to drive it, let alone at speed..........

Hi chaps

The horn had dropped off the front panel and got stuck between the steering relay and the front panel.

Ive been through the rest of the system and cannot feel anything unusual.

Yup your right i should have checked before pushing on, it was foolish!

Thanks for your help all.

Rob
