Bearings and breaks

Hi All,

I've got a 1988 Land Rover (defender). I was driving to work yesterday and found the pedal falling all the way to the floor a couple of times. Back to normal with a but of pumping. Also had a lot of grinding coming from the front right when breaking.

After a careful drive to and from work, I've just lifted the front right to find a lot of play in the wheel.

Obviously the bearings need replacing, but could this have been the reason the breaks went down?

The wheel wobble will mean the brake disc wobbles between the caliper pistons which will push the caliper pistons back into the calipers, so when you go to brake you have to move the pistons forard to allow for that gap before they can touch the discs.

This is how I can tell when my wheel bearings need adjustment. Just a little bit of extra travel in the brake pedal. A lot of extra travel when the stub axle cracked!
