20W50 oil

Hi All, looking for some advice please. could do with putting a couple of litres in my 86 2.5TD 90. My uncle recommends using 20W50 but everything in the internet says 10W 40 or 15 W 40.

My uncle is pretty old school but generally he knows his stuff.

what do you guys think?

20/50 will be just fine, i run 20/50 in one of my 200tdi as it almost totally worn out!

Old saying goes, any oil is better than no oil!

Put supermarket 10-40 semi-synthetic oil in it and tell your uncle that you have used 20-50.

20/50 is for the non turbo engines. The turbo requires a thinner grade oil. If the engine is very worn you may get away with it. But better to stick to the recommended grade.

How do you wear out a tdi what sort of abuse has it been put through, I have 330k on mine and it is still going strong.

I have no idea I bought the engine 2nd hand several years ago, it was covered in dried mud so assumed it was from a dead off roader, and the injection pump was full of veg oil.
It breathes like a pig when hot, and whilst it goes okay, it is not exactly stunning which it should be as it is in a series, though tbh even if it lost two cylinders it would still be faster than the oriignal 2 litre diesel that was in there!

for hot weather operating (high temps ) works wonderful, old high mile engine, low oil pressure, oil leaks, etc associated with old engines works wonderful, come winter and it makes a diesel start harder, so needs to be changed to a lower weight oil

not true, the temps a engine operates in is more critical.

Cheers Thor. That’s basically why he said. It’s hot and hilly here at the minute so sounds ideal. I’ll get a full service come Oct and ask them to change it to recommended then ready for winter
