Can anyone who positively knows please tell me which way round this seal should go. I have now seen too versions so much confusion. The Defenders use this seal and show it fitting with the protruding part facing outwards. This is how some people fit it on the later series 3's but I have also seen it fitted the other way round. I would be grateful if an expert could say positively which way round it goes on a late series 3 (1984). Cheers for any input.
I have fitted mine with the protruding face (pic 2) facing outwards away from the bearings and now doubting myself. It came with the older style seal which was wrong so no reference there.

the outer garter spring goes to the outside, push seal in till outer lip contacts hub

Hi, thanks for the reply but still confused as they are both inner springs. In which photo is the face that should be inwards towards the wheel bearings.

If you look at it there's only one way you can knock it in without bending it out of shape.

Hi, I have just taken the other side off which did have this seal fitted and it does go in as per Pic 2 with the lip sticking up. It looks wrong but it is the right way way to fit it. I think this was causing the confusion. You need to push it on the outer part and it goes down until the top of the inner part is flush with the flange ( a cut wheel bearing case works well). There is a lip at the bottom that will stop it going in too far and touching the bearing.
This corresponds to the early defender fitment as per Land Rover WSM. I hope this helps anyone else who encounters the seal or is upgrading the earlier series. FYI it has 2 spring flanges hence a double lip seal, Also this later style hub means you must pack the wheel bearings in grease, the seal is keeping the grease in and oil out.
