hello, I have picked up a Freelander 1 2002 to save from the scrap yard

first fault was no power/lots of smoke, car couldnt go over 15mph or 1,500 rpm
First inspection airfilter had been nested in! completley blocking up maf

New airfilter and turbo vent filter and crankcase filter and cleaned
Car now will rev to 2,500 RPM
New low pressure fuel pump and filter (correct orientation) still no change so refitted old pump
Vac lines checked, Split line found under inlet manifold feeding the EGR solinoid, All vac lines replaced inc lines to turbo solenoid, MAP sensor checked for gunk, Some gunk found so cleaned port in manifold and inside sensor. Egr blocked off at the same time.
Turbo solenoid checked and can be seen actuating on full throttle, Further road test car now revs on the spot up to 3,800 rpm slowley, and can still only go 30mpg no smoke when driving, with MAF disconnected engine is slightly more livley and smokes alot but still no power

i have looked at live data, fuel pressures seam correct, The MAP sensor its between 95 KPA and 104 no matter what the throttle position, does this look to be a MAP sensor issue? There is no fault codes, car starts up instantly on turn of the key i also have a recipt for 4 new injectors being fitted 2 years ago

Cheers dan

Before condemning the MAP sensor, you need to check the actual boost pressure, to see if it correlates or differs from what the MAP sensor is reporting.

whats the best way to test this?
Unfortunately it's not easy. You need to tap into the boost system somewhere, so you can connect a conventional pressure gauge. It is possible to lash up some pipes at the MAP take off hole in the manifold. You need a pipe that fits in the manifold tight enough not to blow out under pressure. You then need to T off that pipe, so you can push the MAP sensor in one branch of the T and fit a conventional boost test gauge at the other branch of the T.

I've done it just once in 15 years of working on FL1s.

ill have a look tomorrow at rigging something up, does the inlet manifold need to come off to change the map sensor or is their a trick im missing? unfortunately i have limited tools at my disposal with the car but ill see what i can do if the cars not making any boost wheres the next place to check?

Update for any future readers,
Problem fixed!
it dawned on me checking all the repair sheets it was barely doing more than 100 miles a year, exhaust is never getting a good run/blast to clear out

obviously there was a couple of issues mentioned above but the final fix was a clogged exhaust cat!
Removed exhaust and found completely smooth clogged cat

given a scrape can see the honey cone, still no light through so cut out straight pipe, full power now
no further running faults

Hows that done? Just need to get a mot on it then sell it, all ready got a nissan xtrail for 4x4 dont need another though it's a commercial freelander which I do like the idea off

Thanks. I did check my VCU the other day and as it’s not too complicated I didn't do a video, if there is a demand I will reconsider it. As far as the test goes there seem to be plenty of descriptions on how to do it in forums. Basically put in gear jack up one rear wheel, brakes off (make sure brakes aren’t binding by rotating to feel with both rear wheels off ground beforehand), attach a long wrench to 22mm socket on wheel nut, extend it to 1.2m by taping on a broom handle/bar. Attach 5kg weight to the point 1.2m away from wheel nut/socket, position at 1:30pm angle and time the time it takes to rotate down to 3pm angle, a change of 45 degrees which should take under a minute. Mine took 45 secs, so good fortunately.

but the final fix was a clogged exhaust cat!
This was my next thing to suggest. It seems to be getting more common, as the vehicles age.
so cut out straight pipe
You should have just broken out the ceramic material, leaving the empty cat shell. ;)

Cutting the cat out will likely fail the MOT, as it needs to be visible for the taster.

I'll check that out some point

I was going to then my friend pointed out take the cat to scrap weighing it in, not sure what they go for mind

Fortunately this mot wont be an issue, you can get fake cats for mot which if my neighbour buying it wants me to fit I will

It still would have been so much easier to simply bash the guts out of the blocked cat. You'll get a few £ weigh in for the old one. Actually you'll get less then you'd have paid to fit the straight through pipe, which is why I'd just bash out the innards.

Bit late now, but you'll know for next time. ;)

Typical! Fortunately this didn't really cost me anything, old exhaust pipe from the exhaust I made on my is200

Round here mots are rather friendly so will probably be fine, I'm not into diesels but isnt it just a visual inspection? As long as it looks ok they probably wont care

That's good. Around here, they're hot on modifications to the emission system. :(

It's a visual inspection, for signs of tampering. ;)

Hopefully so. It would be unfortunate if the next owner gets an unexpected bill at the next MOT.

Looks to be my neighbour buying it, he will know all, I'll put one of those fake cats in, if it looks like one with the truth of the old one clogged I'm sure its believable for mot lol

£600 is cheap for a commercial FL1 with miles that low.
Down here, it's worth easily 3 times as much.
