Finally got round to stripping the gearbox that I replaced in my Defender last year and found the layshaft is missing quite a few bits of teeth. I’ve attached some pics hopefully someone might know why it’s done this. Gearbox was a rebuilt box from a company down south (not ashcroft) and only lasted 18months 3000miles.

Ouch looks drastic, wonder if one tooth broke and then broken bit was pulled into the mesh.
Have you contacted the supplier?

I did when originally happened they weren’t interested as gearbox was out of warranty. The gears on the pinion shaft look slightly distorted and most damage at bottom off the gear

thats some shock load like you get with engaging 2 gears at the same time, what were the circumstances

It was driving fine went to my daughters no issues then on way home started making ratcheting noise that just got worse. I swapped it out a year ago with a box I tried rebuilding myself that’s now failed too

I’ve had a few gearboxes rebuilt over the years
Fiat, Renault, Triumph, VW
They never lasted very long, a few thousand miles and issues resurfaced.
