L322 Ignition key turns but starter motor won't turn -possible solution.

Just thought i'd share this one one.
2003 Range Rover Vogue 4.4. V8 had what I thought was the dreaded upper steering column death rattle. Car unlocked, ignition key goes in and turns ok, clicking in steering column, steering column releases then nothing, just the ignition clicking. I changed the ignition switch and relay. Still nothing.

This had been going on for at least a year, after a few attempts, or leaving for a few days it would start. I left it with an independent RR dealership for a couple of weeks. They could not find the fault. We both presumed this was a fatal steering column fault.

Last week it failed again and I decided to try the spare key. The spare key won't synchronise with the central locking etc so I presumed it was dead. I unlocked the car with the main key and put the spare key in the ignition and amazingly it started. I decided to do some key maintenance. I replaced the battery in the main key and tried it again. It still did not work. On further investigation i found the little black chip inside the key had become dislodged and was loose in the key. I put the chip back in its correct location and low and behold the car started!

Fingers and everything else crossed this has permanently solved the issue!

Had a customer a few years back and she dropped her key in a big car park and the top came off the key,
Needless to say her car wouldn’t start, I got called out to it and after her telling what happen I took the key apart and found the transponder chip missing,
Take it from me trying to find a small black chip on a black tarmac car park wasn’t a lot of fun except she had big boobs with a low cut top and being on her knees made it worthwhile

You failed to tell us she was 75 yrs old and her boobs were hanging out the bottom of her pullover.

Just goes to show though that once again things get left unattended to as he had had this issue for about a year. Why leave it that long !!

Thank you so much for posting about this possible remedy to a problem you ignored for a year! Not a week or a month, a year. How marvellous that you do so little to remedy issues with your vehicle. Something which you thought was a major problem , the possibility of your steering column failing at any time, you just ignored.
Do we have your registration. Just to ensure no-one from here EVER buys a vehicle from you.
