Hi everyone. I've been a fan of the Range Rover for many years and now I'm thinking of buying one. I've more or less decided on a 2010-2012 4.4 tdv8. I don't mind big miles or v cars because I expect it to be a keeper. I've read the usual stories about how unreliable they can be and the cost of repairs and have taken that on board. What I'm asking at this stage is do things go wrong and need fixing, or do they go wrong and leave you stranded ? Thanks

Hi and welcome

pop ur question over in the Range Rover section, more will see it there

ps , anything mechanical / electrical can fail

Welcome..

The L322 is an expensive car to maintain, and fix.

They do break often..

Can be luck of the draw though, sometimes.

Sometimes the simplist of faults can render a car undriveable. Depends on the fault.

Leaking brake fluid means loss of brakes so yer can't drive it. Doors failing to lock is a security issue but still drives ok. Broken fool pump means no fool delivery to the engine so it will struggle to start/run. Air con gas leak means no air con but will drive normally.

Yer need to bear int mind its an eggspensive vehicle ter buy new, made of eggspensive parts. Later on int its like it will have devalued but the parts will be just as eggspensive as before. Running and repair costs are high which is why yer better oft buying a Freelander. ;)

Hello, Yes I appreciate that. From research on this and other forums the general agreement seems to be the later the better(L322) hence my choice of the 4.4 tdv8 and the 8 speed box and I'll only buy one with full history. I'm prepared for large bills as part of owning such a car but I'm trying to get a sense of whether you and other owners set off on a journey confident of reaching their destination or always wondering if it will make it.

Hi, You're right of course and this is the sort of feedback I'm hoping for. I'm fixated on L322 at the moment and before I buy am trying to get a sense of what they are like to own on a daily basis. Were they just intrinsically rubbish cars from new or is it down to poor components and maintenance as the vehicle ages?

Good ones are good ones, if maintained properly.

Lemons are lemons.

Telling the difference is key. Know what you can/can’t do and budget accordingly. Even if this just means roadside assistance cover.

You shouldn’t worry, you would need to enjoy it :)

Yes.

If yer going to get a garage to do all the work then it will be more eggspensive than working on it yerself. You can buy a diagnostic device to look up error codes to help you work on it yerself.

Its a heavy vehicle so wear and tare service items like brake pads wear quickly. Bushes need replaced more frequently than other cars. You have to be careful when buying as the disco 3 and 4, and rr's tend to need a lot of work as they pass 100k miles to make them right. Some owners don't want to spend the money so they sell on. The purchase price when new would have been something like £70k+ for what yer looking to buy. They look nice and are nice to drive but that comes at a cost to keep them in the road.
