One day the needle of the fuel gauge dropped off the scale, light on! A few searches of this great forum gave me some info on where to locate the unit in question. However a couple of bum steers didn't help.

Anyway, for those of you who have had this problem here's a tip.

After dismantling most of the rear of the car to gain access to the floor I found the access plate not as described in some searches. It is right in the middle of the boot floor. I found it best to cut a neat flap that could allow easy access to this area for future use.

Once removed the pump and sender can be inspected. Using a multimeter set to ohms check across the two sender pin terminals, both small wired, the other two thicker gauge wires are for the pump. If no reading is seen here check further down onto the sender scale pcb itself. Check across the two soldered joints, lift the float arm up, the reading should decrease in value. If you get no reading or if sporadic then check the soldered joints.

I found I had a poor soldered joint on one of the two wires on the pcb, re-soldered and checked again it was resolved.

Refit pump unit, I would refit the tank seal first once cleaned, then refit the pump unit. Remember to tilt the unit to the right and drop the float arm in first then straighten the unit up, saves you dicking around with the seal afterwards. Locate the tab to align then hand tighten up the locking collar whilst pushing down on the sprung loaded pump unit.

What were your exact symptoms for this fault?

I have a fuel guage that dont read correctly, i have also changed the pump unit and it's been the same for both pumps..

Just like to say a massive thank you for your advice.. As my fuel gauge went down this morning..if it wasn't for your it's I would of have to go to the garage .. As is its the wire had broken off the fuel gauge inside the tank.. A bit of a tinkle later all good again.. Thank you very much once more...

Just had this issue after spending all day trying to fix leaking sunroofs... Hoping its as easy as this and not the £100+ for a new pump etc..
Thanks in advance

Hi I have a td5 1999 fuel gauge stuck at a 1/4 tank low level light on replaced pump due to failing but gauge still not working any ideas of wiring faults thanks perky 64

If you have 3rd row seats fitted, just one straight cut across the top of the two slots in the carpet after the seat fixing finishers are removed will give you a flap for access, refit the finishers, they will hold the carpet in place.

Hi tried 2new pumps gauge still the same have a feed at unit for gauge tried a separate earth still no joy does the wiring rub through anywhere ?

I had a problem with the fuel gauge changing its mind on how much fuel I had
I've finally got round to looking at it today and found the sender unit hanging around by the wires so I reconnected it to the pump and all fine

Hello I have a 2003 discovery td5 engine conked out but fuel gauge reads 1/4 full so I fitted a new sender unit but again when fuel gauge hits the 1/4 full line it conked out again but when I put a Jerry can of diesel in and wait for it to prime up starts fine so i go fill up with 30 pounds worth of diesel and drives brilliant no problems at all until i get to the 1/4 line again then conks out any other suggestions much appreciated thankyou

The fuel sender is part of the in-tank fuel pump and if this incorrectly installed it will give inaccurate readings.
