Hi all. I've got a 200tdi in my series 3 . Im using the series rad,and a separate oil cooler. I've noticed some brown/rusty water coming out of the top of the radiator , and when I opened the radiator up the water was brown. When I started the engine there were lots of bubbles... im I right in thing head gasket. Apart from that, the oil is fine and its not smoking. Only losing a drop of water...

sounds that way if gasket had blown it would pump water out of rad in seconds ,youll have a slight leak past fire ring to water way will show up as black stain across effected area

Brown coolant normally means no anti freeze and engine is rusting from the inside out

Iv always put antifreeze in. Anyway to stop it. ?? Looks like i need 2 valve guides. How do you get them out of the head. It's all stripped down on my bench. Just need some advice

Cant see how valve guieds would have caused the bubbles/pressurising?

Ive done afew 200 head gaskets and Ive always found it almost impossible to see where they were failing, but new gasket sorted the issues out.

Fyi the blue anti freeze needs changing every two years as the additives in it that stop the corrosion get depleted, the anti freeze side still works but then the engine starts to ruat internally.

Ok ,so I had my head skimmed, had new valve guides fitted, had the valves re ground, had it pressure checked. Now ive put the valves back , with new stem seals. When I give the head to the auto engineering place, the valves were in order 1-8 from rad to bulkhead. When I had it back they were 8-1 from rad to bulkhead. But I thought they must have lapped them in that order leave them. So put head back on. Engine wouldn't turn on crank by hand, so I slackend the rockers valve adjusters off and the engine rotated. Re-set the valve clearnces and it still rotated. But even with all the injectors in, and all the glow pugs in. I can turn the engine over by hand easy. And I started it , and its making an awfull sound. PLEASE ANY ADVICE!!!

Is it possible the valves are swapped round the inlets and exhausts are two different sizes

You just know its head off time again?
Did you take any pics of refurbed head before refitting?

So I took off the the rocker cover and first thing I noticed was number 4 valve sitting up and no valve cap on. The push rod could not have been seated properly, stopping me turning the engine by hand, so when I adjusted the valves I set it to the wrong point. It must have popped in place when the engine started. So it wasn't opening the exhaust valve. Re adjusted and now its ok. Just hope no damage has been done. ☺

When I was training to be a bus mechanic years ago when being trained actually meant something, whenever we stripped a head we were told to turn the engine by hand with the rocker cover off to check it all moved correctly. If that was ok we would then turn the engine on its starter with the fuel off as a second check before putting the rocker cover on and starting it up.
