1992 200tdi Discovery- gradually improving my daily driver

Just picked up this earlier in the week, full MOT, 126k, nice condition, £800!
Looking forward to ironing out the niggles with it as I drive. Delighted!

Planning on keeping it as original as possible- 200tdis are getting rarer.
After a set of beige boot seats, possibly load roller cover and maybe an original Discovery rear wheel cover too!

It’s had a load of work done previously, rear crossmember, front inner wheel arches and stuff. It’s not perfect but pretty sound overall.

Bahamas beige interior too, very nice.

Lots of remanufactured stuff and reasonable second hand parts available.

92 is pre fusible links so be warned that the distribution post through the bulkhead is 100% live with no overload protection to the electrickery!

Which is annoying. Even the cat is saying “You idiot...” A learner driver stopped, went again and stopped, I didn’t. My fault- can’t argue.
On removing the outer wing and bits, I discovered the inner wing was i) bent and ii) rusty...

So luckily someone nearby was breaking a 200tdi which gave up it’s bumper, light surround and wing. I’ve also ordered a new whole inner wing from Froggatt’s...
Loosely fitting them made it look happier...

So currently I’m waiting for the inner wing section to come, when I’ll strip it all off again and crack out the sparkly stick!

There's plenty of info on here with piccys, we likes piccys ...

While your there with a sparky stick, check the footwell, floor and front of sill and body mounts, (one by the headlight and one on the sill front bit) ... they're prone to tinworm and mud collection ...

Pricey but worth doing as I want to keep it. Insurance guy came round today- it’ll be written off but he said buying it back won’t be a problem as it’s non structural damage.

With the way the friggits stuff works you can actually make them bolt in which is awesome and I sort of wish I had made mine that way but never mind.

Shame though, it was such an original vehicle

Yep it’s same one still on Autotrader! Seller hasn’t pulled ad.
Whilst waiting for inner wing to come I got cracking on the gearshift bias spring replacement (gearshift was awkward to get into 3rd/4th), the plate had broken and was an easy fix.

New bias plate and spring in place...

So should shift smoother when all fixed! Also tried fixing lock on passenger door- key always kept getting stuck. Needs good soaking in WD40!

Inner wing came yesterday so started stripping ancillaries off old one- wasn’t too bad but did reveal more tinworm in footwell.

This will need to be patched before inner wing goes on.

Not particularly looking forward to removing inner wing top too as will have to straighten it up and reuse it new one doesn’t have one... it is quite mangled!

Still at least I’m getting started with it!

That's easy enough to straighten out but you could always try and get another one off a scrap motor, the top section rarely rots out so should be salvage worthy, ask on the forum to see if anyone has one laying around (@The Mad Hat Man how is your stock of body panels?)
