So a couple of days ago I ordered one of these...

First and second bearings on a block I am rebuilding don’t look so great. local engine shop did not sound over thrilled at the prospect of fitting new ones warning that they can press new ones in but if the cam does not fit afterwards they won’t be able to do anything about it. The other options are all a distance away and would involve palleting the block up. So undeterred I decided to have a crack at it myself. Have watched a few u.s based videos on YouTube and it looks relatively straight forward though obviously has to be right. I shall practice first by removing one then attempting to drift it back in and keeping alignment. Bearings will be pre-finished ones from turner engineering. Will keep this post updated on my progress. Wish me luck! :)

Cheers :) have just been looking at mine again and interestingly 3 and four bearings look almost like new. Definitely loads of checking and marking up to be done and then checking again. Think the ones behind number 1 have to be drifted out towards the front because of lack of access between 2 and 3.

IIRC there's a core plug you can take out to give access at the back?
 
That’s right yes the big one on the rear.

Does not look like the oil holes on the very front one have been lined up properly. Must of been like this from new :eek:

I think it's lined up ok. The oil exits that hole and enters the channel in the cam shaft, the oil can then circulate around the shaft and pressurise in the shell. That ring will be raised, rather than indented. The bearing shell looks a bit ropy?

Think it looks worse in pic but yes it is pretty bad. Looking again there is a smaller feed hole approaching the top of the bearing which is in line so yes this must be correct.

Edit: Scratch that...

Actually lack of access between 2 and 3 is making me cautious of drifting a bearing into somewhere where it looks impossible to remove. Things should be clearer when i receive the tool as being an expanding type it may be possible , or not , to drift them both out in different directions.

No instructions but found them quickly enough online. Using the tool was pretty much self explanatory. Using expander no.2 and three blows with an heavy hammer no.1 bearing was out!

^ How it looks when it is expanded using the socket head for a snug fit. It is the other side which is important to take note of though as this has a lip to help drive it out.

^ bearing out. Slacken tool again to remove bearing from expander and two more to go. May practice putting the new ones in with the old bearings first though.
 
All bearings removed and noticed they have arrows stamped onto the outside diameter like this ->

Does this mean they have to be pressed in from this direction? Or press the lot in from the front and just keep them arranged the same way?

Edit : i ended up driving 1 and 2 bearing from the front of engine and 3 and 4 from the rear. The new ones did not come with arrows but like the originals half an half circle cut out on one side. The two rear cut outs face the rear and the two fronts face forwards. Using them like this the face you drive in has a deeper chamfer I guess to help with initial alignment.

Camshaft bearings 1 , 2 and 3 from the front of engine now fitted and cam turns nicely in them. Unfortunately I had the tool adjusted incorrectly whilst fitted the last one , a bit slack , and the bearing folded in on itself.... at least I know it is do-able now however. Will just have to order a new set.

@jamesmartin have you noticed such a difference between oil feed holes on the first bearing before? I would ring turners to ask them but shut at weekends... :(

Though in need of an extra bearing due to my own carelessness I am declaring today a success! :D I’m happy I got this far to be honest.

I only used the front one out of the set and I'm wondering if I kept the rest. I'm away and not home till Tuesday. I could look then and post them to you if they're still there!
