So the truck managed to get through the mot today with only a few advisories - not a bad result as it was a pig when I bought it a year ago and I highly doubt the credibility of the mot and service that it had before I bought it. But anyway!

One of the advisories was the perished boots on the knuckle joints, top & bottom both sides. I’ve been thinking about replacing them as there is some play on the n/s (noticed when I replaced the front hubs recently) but decided it was beyond me...

Called the local “specialist” today and got quoted £300 per side... Does that sound right?! I can imagine it’s a pig of a job but with a workshop & the right tools is it that bad?

Does anyone have any experience of getting this job done by a garage and if so am I being tight or does that sound steep?

Cheers

Wow - that sounds really steep !
I think the parts are maybe £20 ~ £30 per side, maybe less dependant on supplier.
With the right tools (which the "specialist" should have), it should maybe 3 or 4 hours max per side.
Based on that his hourly rate is more than £80 - which is excessive.
Find an alternative local Independant.

Yes agree re the parts, I was wondering what else I was missing. Ironically as the brakes and hubs are new as are all the bolts removing everything will be simple - until the knuckles itself.

Will get googling for another specialist!

I wouldn't flinch at that price per side, not like they need done regular and as long as that is supply and fit OEM parts it's not that bad at all, assuming OEM @ £30 & 4hrs per side at 55+VAT I could well live with that considering the potential ball ache that they can be.

Yes it was oem parts. Found another specialist who's reasonably local so will give them a call tomorrow and compare. I don't mind paying for a good job/decent parts as I know it's beyond me to do just don't want to pay way over the odds

Best of luck but don't be surprised when they ask for similar money.

Suppose it does seem expensive when garages give you the bill but they have overheads, home gamers like me just have the price of parts and any special tools for the jobs we do on our trucks.

Sometimes I would also pay for a garage to do the job but unfortunatelly very limited number of reliable specialist here in hungary. So the only choice that I have to do. But even no hourly fee counted for ourselves, we can not forget that our free time also costs. On top of that we may need to invest to special tools, and strugle a lot without pit or 2 post car lift.....
usually I enjoy working on my car, but for some jobs I would take the car to garage and let them to do the "bad" jobs even they ask relatively lot.

decent lemforder ball joints are 15-20 pounds a piece, can be a pig of a job due to corrosion even with the right tools but 300 per side is a little steep

How do you break down your costs to cover a professional set up?

I'm genuinely curious as we all price things up differently for the work we do and in relation to our geographical location.

its not quite the same for me now as i dont employ anyone and havent for 10 years ,i work from home, but for general stuff like that its parts plus what i feel is fair, roughly 200 a 7 hr day

Well thanks for the input everyone. Booked in to the local landy garage for both sides to be sorted, and a few niggles that I haven't had the time to fix myself!!

Just looked through RAVE. That does look like a pig of a job, doubly so without the dedicated LR tools, respect to those DIYers taking it on.
I noticed that you are only supposed to do it 3 times before replacing the axle case. How do you know how many times you have left? There is mention of yellow marks, is the theory that the dealer adds a mark each time and 3 strikes and you're out? If so is there a more reliable way of measuring wear?

its easy on the 4th or 5th times the joints just tap in easily showing the location hole has stretched that much its barely holding the joint secure

Don't know them, i saw another "independent LR specialist" between Wickham & Boarhunt, don't know them either as I am always fixing my own.

Let us know how you get on :)
Will do.

I tried the one I think you're talking about but the guy wasn't able to do the job due to injury.

West 4x4 in Waltham chase have been really good so far - I've used them for a couple of jobs when I first bought it last bar and new even less than I do now about mechanics!
