After 6months owning a defender, I'm back in a discovery :)
20190227_135902.jpg

2006 TDV6 Manual S
153000miles recent cambelts, rear diff, rear air bags...more I can't remember. Good history anyway. 4 matching tyres with decent tread.

She needs a new hub n/s/f so I'll do both fronts, and the tailgate won't open. There's other minor bits but they're my priority.

Really impressed with how these drive, they're a bit stupid quick for the size :D about 3-4mpg better than a standardish td5 defender so far and really, really comfortable.

Plan for next 2 week's is

Sort tailgate and hubs
Wash her. Thoroughly. She's filthy
Polish the headlights
Do the tip run
Etc etc :p

Link to @gstuart buyers guide, came in very handy https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/buyers-guide.312800/

Embarrassingly looking forward to towing the van with her

I'll post more pics when she's clean and will do a little walk through in discovery forum on how to strip tailgate and get to upper actuator and latch and what have ya. I've done it today but will wait til I've fitted new parts so it's complete with solution :)

Thanks to a few lads on here for advice and listening to me change my mind every 5mins :D you know who you are

I Like a good Disco 3 the Farmer has one, and it lugs around a loaded cattle trailer and flat bed with equipment that weighs an excess of 5 tonne so yes they can tow. ;)

The 2.7 is also a nice sounding motor, for a diesel ;)

Any pics of the interior?

Not taken any yet mate, but it is nice and clean inside and not excessively worn :)

I did have the window down tonight on way home and it does actually sound quite nice when you boot it!

Its the thinking man's defender and the rough arse bastard's range rover :p:D

@1988smithy , great intro to ur D3

Found this for u if it’s any help ref ur tailgate https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/tailgate-latch-replacement-99648.html

Good to hear my buyers guide came in handy ,

As for MPG around town I get around 20-22 on a run 29-31mpg , indeed don’t believe the dashboard monitor or as we call them lie o meters, lol , they are around 10% out

Check ur MAP sensor is clean, sits in top of ur throttle body and blank ur egrs if they haven’t already been done, leave the pipes in place

Also done a split charge system

If u need any info don’t hesitate to give us a shout, plenty here to always help

Cheers @gstuart , disco3 is proving to be really good source, I used similar thread to guide me today :)

Mpg is showing 24-26 on trip computer around town, so suspect I'm doing similar to yourself in reality!

Regarding EGR blank, I'll not be doing it for a couple of weeks, shall I still give the MAP a clean regardless? I can always clean it again when I come to to do the blank can't I lol

Great pics, they get really shìtted up don't they  you've been busy again or was the split charge done a while ago? What's the plans with that?

Hi

Indeed also found the D3 forum invaluable to info

For such a heavy vehicle and big engine I’m surprised in reality it’s does well for mpg

Wouldn’t hurt to check the MAP sensor , egrs might have already been blanked but if they haven’t here’s a link , with the pipes also left in place mine went through the mot ok

http://media.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10771/BAS EGR Blanking Kit Fitting SMALL.pdf

Also when u clean up the o rings in the Y throttle body use some silicone grease to reinstall it , ref the egr blank instructions, leave the pipes attached and just use a blank between the engine block and egr pipes

I used some stainless steel 1.5mm blanking plates

Imagine u know already with having a lot of previous experience , just use some carb, egr cleaner for the MAP sensor and don’t be tempted to poke anything down the hole

Done the split charge last year , so that I’ve got the aux battery for when I park up camping etc, still got my ac to sort out, suspect its the condensor , hard wire the dashcam in and fit the Bluetooth tyre monitoring system that can be used via my iPad

I also fitted new silicone intercooler hoses along with lubricating the turbo actuator arm, that was a lot of fun trying to gain access to it, but was a blessing because I found a broken jubilee clip on the short turbo hose , also fitted the T bolt clamps

When u turn the ign on and off the turbo actuator self motors to prevent it from sticking , mine didn’t have the software so reflashed the ecm to add it, all done via the gap iid tool, cost an extra £25 to add the software actuator patch , you will hear it when u turn the engine off

Don’t forget plenty here to always help

Lovely @gstuart Cheers mate.

Wife has just told me the reverse lights aren't working, gear indicator on dash and parking sensors work so think xyz calibration is ok.

2 timken hubs bought today, nearly £250

And a load of interior cleaning stuff and some more car shampoo

Also ordered an OEM upper tailgate actuator, I'll detail that fix in disco forum.

Also need to look at intercooler bottom hose and gearbox breather.

Busy weekend :eek::D

No worries and very welcome , pleasure being able to share what knowledge I’ve picked up

Never know it might just be the reversing bulbs, heard they can go in pairs

Changing the intercooler hoses isn’t that bad, apart from that turbo one, what’s wrong with ur gearbox breather , or did u mean the front diff breather modification , where u cut off the old breather and fit a new modified one

Breather pipes on the D3 are all installed from the factory

Indeed looks like a busy weekend

Ps, here is the reset for the XY switch, never know ur luck and might work ?????

If the bulbs have blown buy good quality ones

1) Find a long straight and quiet section of road.
2) Select LOW Ratio.
3) Reverse for about 200 yards or until you get the beep and the R on the dash gear number indicator. And then a tiny bit more for good luck. Stop, then...
4) Go forwards in 1st until number appears. Clutch pedal must be fully raised each time.
5) Then up through the Gears waiting for each of the numbers to appear. Do not skip any gears!
6) Stop at 6th, back into neutral, switch off engine.
7) Restart and select High Ratio and you're on your way..

what’s wrong with ur gearbox breather ,

There's a fair leak from offside of the bell housing, defo trans fluid. Ive had a feel around toward top of gearbox and think its coming from a 90 degree angled pipe.

I'll try and get a decent pic tomorrow, it has had recent clutch so hope it's just this pipe been disturbed. Seems to be when engine is running, doesn't make much when off and parked.

Apparently there's a metal pipe coming off the top of the gearbox, linked to another metal pipe with a small rubber hose. There's anecdotes of this failing

Thks , will also see if I can find any further info for u

Mines an auto so don’t know what kind of set up that has

Also found this ref the size of that breather pipe

The breather consist of short piece of rubber hose that attaches to the pipe that goes up the back of the engine. The hose perishes hence the leak. Get 2 metres of 8 mm I/D fuel hose and replace the old arrangement. Lead the hose down the L/H side in the engine bay next to the brake reservoir. Then onto the pipe on top of the gearbox. Fixed.

Jesus Gary, nice 1!

So 2m of the fuel hose to replace whole assembly? Could I just replace rubber section do you think?

Motorbike spares shop by me will have 8mm fuel pipe

Glad it helped , yeh i know have too much time on my hands, lol

Here’s a pic of the actual breather pipe and looking at it, indeed seems the only bit is that short rubber part, imagine replacing that along with a couple of new jubilee clips should resolve the issue

That's a massive help, I'm at work on late shift so you've took a lot of leg work out for me, cheers! Be a nice little fix if it is the breather

Always a pleasure to help, as I’m laid up at the moment after back surgery it gives me something to do, :D

Plus ref the dual batteries I charge them via my 12s socket using a CTEK charger

Installed a charger point on the front of my house so when I pull on the drive I can easily plug it in

The CTEK charger is in my hallway , I have a battery monitor in the disco so can see via my iPad what the battery voltage is and when it needs charging

Alternator is 150 amp and will push out up to 15.8 Vdc
