hi all,

Hope this is the right section.
Engine: 200tdi defender
I have an issue, where the power steering pump mount attaches to the timing cover (lower bolt) it has stripped the thread from the timing cover.

How can I fix this the easiest way? There is not much room between the hole and the chassis so getting a drill in there I think would be hard.

Has anyone used a self tapping hex bolt before?

Any help welcome. Thanks

Why not just do it properly?

Remove the timing case and drill it out and fit a helicoil, it isn't a bad job, you can replace the seals and the timing belt while you're in there and you will have the peace of mind in knowing that it isn't a bodge that is going to fail and leave you stranded in the back end of the boonies.

I had the timing belt and seals done when I had engine swap about 8 months ago. That’s why I don’t really want to retake cover off etc.

But you are right... it’s the best way

Bummer, always the way isn't it, but at least you know that the right way is the best way and that it would be an even bigger disaster should the bandaid get you by create new problems later on such as a cracked timing case or such like.
