Hi guys
I am currently making plans to have my suffix F, S2a gearbox rebuilt by J. Beaumont's and at the same time fit an H.R.T.C. Kit supplied by Ashcroft transmissions and to be built up and fitted to my gearbox by Beaumont's ( 200tdi ) fitted.
On the Ashcroft's site where it explanes what the H.R.T.C. is about they state that the suffix C, low gear 532979 may be needed, i don't know anything about gearboxes so i don't understand why i would need this part and Ashcrofts don't supply it.
Please can someone explane

presumably suffix e the all synchro mesh 2a box which is obviously after c so you should have low gear 532979

The low gear you require is the one in the transfer case needs to match the teeth on the intermediate gear provided by ahcroft.

I seem to remember that you were going with the 3.54 diffs, if that the case you may want to take a long hard look at this page http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/gear_ratio.htm

A combination of the diffs and the H.R.T.C are gong to leave you with a huge hole between 3rd and 4th and if you can get it up to 4000rpm a top end approaching 120mph.

I would go with an overdrive to narrow the gap between 3rd and 4th, even then its probably still noticeable.

When i had my last S2a 200tdi it had an ashcroft transfer box and o/d and on motorways speed wise it was great but the engine was screaming above 65mph onwards, not trying to make a racing car out of it just trying to lower the revs but if i'm not happy with it once its done i've still got the original diffs :)

I think you had one or the other which would explain why it was revving quite high, dont think you can have HRTC and overdrive, mutually exclusive.

Agreed, each one of the following seem to raise the ratio by roughly 10%:
32/33 inch wheels (ie 235/85)
A high ratio transfer
an OD
3.54 diffs
Any 3 seems to be ok, 4 is too much. The way to do it is to plug all the numbers into the Ashcrofts ratio calculator and look at the ratios. Mine is 32" wheels, 3.54 diffs and OD and that's 2000rpm at 60. My 3.3 diesel can pull that but smaller engine could struggle. It only works because I use the OD to split 3rd / 4th. With the 3.54 diffs 3-4 is so wide already that a can't go from 3 to 4th if there's any incline, I have to go 3+od then 4th. Personally I would never advise a high ratio transfer over an overdrive, especially now Roamerdrives are available new. High ration transfer is still a 4 speed box trying to cover a huge range, a OD box is effectively a 6 speed box once you master the split changes. If you look at the graphs on the ratio calculator for 235/85 / 3.54 and HRTB then look at the 3 to 4th change you will see that you need a lot of revs in 3rd to get any pull in 4th and on a long hill I don't think you could make the change.

Ok it was never comfirmed that it was an H.R.T.C. in my last 2a but the gearing i had with the overall gearing inc std diffs, 750 x 16 tyres and an o/d fitted and the real speeds i was quoting with the 200tdi fitted everyone was saying its got to be fitted with an ashcroft H.R.T.C. but i had an o/d fitted which i'm told you can't fit to that transfer box so with this 2a i've decided on fitting 3.54 diffs aswell, so i will have to see.

Hi, I have a couple of vehicles with the High ratio transfer conversion- and they're GREAT! I also have an overdrive one and for road work it is great too.
but the Ashcroft conversion is nicer to live with...

Tbh i've always liked the o/d as a splitter box so it will be quite interesting to see how it is without the o/d.

Forgot to mention I ordered and received the suffix C, low gear so once my son's back from working away we can deliver everything to the gearbox specialist :)

youd have had one in your t/box already[/QUOTE
Yeah I was a bit confused with what I was reading about the Suffix C, low gear as it was worded YOU MAY need it, so as it wasn't me doing the work building the transfer box and fitting it to the gearbox I decided to buy one and send it with the gearbox and transfer box as I just wasn't sure
