p38 4.0 lpg or 2.5 diesel?

The 4.0 is about 190 bhp
The 4.6 is about 225 bhp
The diesel is about 14 bhp
I can see no reason why anyone would want a manual, the auto box is superb

If you want luxury, ALWAYS get an automatic. In top end luxury cars Automatic gearboxes are excellent...

Admittedly the engine sounds more agricultural than most modern diesels, but with a chip the performance is more than adequate and fuel consumption between 35 - 45mpg. Also if we have a fuel strike I can always nip down the supermarket and pick up cooking oil at 70p a litre.

Admittedly the engine sounds more agricultural than most modern diesels, but with a chip the performance is more than adequate and fuel consumption between 35 - 45mpg. Also if we have a fuel strike I can always nip down the supermarket and pick up cooking oil at 70p a litre.

So what do you tow it with ? Or do you just drop it off cliffs?

18 to 22mpg from my 4.0 P38 and I know thats about right and I dont care anyway. F##k the treehuggers......

Still an awful long way short of 45 mpg

Although diesels get about 35mpg, at the end of the day the performance compared to the petrol versions or LPG for that matter, is huge.

I'd rather have a Petrol with an LPG conversion and keep the performance and pay £0.45 pence a litre, than have a diesel and pay £1.00 a litre and get 35mpg.

It's just more fun.

Well if you want to trade fuel economy figures, I did a recent trip to france, where I ran for approx 90 miles along a dual carriageway at a steady 60mph. The fuel computer turned in 22.1mpg.

Now heres the good bit - thats running a 4.6 on LPG (multi point, fully sequential system) at 45.8 pence per litre. Based on the typical 104p for diesel, this means financially I was running at about 50.2mpg.


Now this is a bit extreme as no one drives everywhere at a constant 56, but I averaged 16mpg over nearly 5K miles according to the pooter, so on LPG at approx 50% cost of regular fuel, thats averaging 32 to the gallon. Makes the diesel look positivly BAD.

Poor fuel enconmy AND performance, why even consider it.

Well said that man! I can't believe someone buys a Range Rover which most consider to be the limousine of 4X4's and firstly buy the diesel version and then stick chip fat in it!

If you want a diesel 4X4 and have decent comfort, want good mileage/mpg buy a Land Rover Discovery or a Freelander...that's why they make them. Sticking chip fat in doesn't feel like sacrilege in one of those.....

I was about to mention running a diesel on vegetable oil as a counter to a V8 with LP, then the economics of a diesel look even better.

I don't have a leg to stand on about the performance difference though!

Can't see that veg oil is such a cheap option anymore, unless your getting it second hand from the local chippy. Price of that has sky rocketed recently, and of course as law abiding citizens all veg oil drivers are declaring the change of fuel use and paying the appropriate tax on it

The question is, how much do you trust your trip computer?
Have you manually checked your fuel consumption?
Trip computers can tell lies sometimes.........

I was 'cheating' when I got that reading, going on the flat at 58mph over a mile. I was going down a hill at 60mph the other day and got 46mpg showing - thought if I posted that it would set cat amongst pigeons!

I do trust the trip computer, as I usually reset it on filling the tank and then compare to actual fuel used/mileage covered - it's accurate to the nearest tenth of an mpg. I usually get 23mpg on a tank, mainly because whilst I get 35mpg on the motorway, the crawl in traffic getting out of the town returns only 9.5mpg...

I'm working on improving this, to do list is: change auto box oil + filter; engine oil (5W40 semi-synth) + filter; thermostat (engine temp gauge rarely rises above cold therefore suspect thermostat is stuck open); change viscous fan (causing annoying vibration/buzz at 1500rpm); and lastly clean gunge out of intake/intercooler.

Love Land Rovers, a Toureg would never get you this involved...

p.s. Couldn't help noticing the diesel is in the lead.
