Hi All.

My query is regarding motor tax in the Rep of Ireland. I have the Cert of Registration and Licensing and the VIN Plate off a 1984 Series 3 Land Rover, Petrol with Irish Reg Number, which is no longer in use and has been declared "off the road" for the past 8 years. I regularly see Discoveries going around in daily use ZV Plates. Could I use this on a Discovery 1 or 2 to avail of the lower Road Tax and Insurance, ie Vintage ?.

I also have a UK V5 Cert for a 1987, Series 111, 88" Petrol.

Would really appreciate any information and would also have to be Legal.

ZV I think is 30+yrs old is it not? circa €60/yr tax?
 
Yes, apparently, it is legal here.

Not from my dealings with the garda and vehicle revenue officers, I had a few problems with my Cork registered Isuzu Trooper and it being converted to commercial vehicle but paperwork filed badly, they are government officials and 1) take their time, 2 have the consistency of dog sh!t, what is good today can be a hanging offence tomorrow.

When you say that it is legal, please be far more specific as to what you are pertaining to do, swapping VINs in any country is 100% illegal, VIN is the identification of the vehicle, if swapping VINs was legal then you'd have a country full of ringers paying €0 in taxes so please be far more specific.

Perhaps @mick the builder could weigh in on this?
 
Err, I may have got the wrong end of the stick here but it looks to me like you're on a public forum asking if you can swap VIN plates on vehicles to pretend one is another to cheat the tax man out of a view quid.

Probably not a good idea.

And I can't see any insurance company not using that as an excuse not to pay out if you end up with a serious claim.

These are my thoughts exactly, however, I see several Discoveries 1 & 2 and Range Rovers on ZV Plates being driven around on a daily basis collecting kids from school, shopping etc. There are a couple of places that I know of offering this service, 1 in Tipperary and 1 in Wicklow. I have no doubt that there must be several more. There must be some loophole in the Law as I checked the windscreen on a 2001 Discovery only yesterday and it had Vintage Tax and Insurance. They are being sold for between 6K and 8K.

I've seen it aswell, new discoveries on 84/86 plates. Definitely a loophole. Also if you wanted to change the tax class on a private jeep to a commercial to save average 900euro, you had to remove the rear seats and weld up the seat belt anchor points . now, it's done on cubic area behind the rear seats. I've again discoveries on commercial tax, 333euro with all the seats. Although it's a legal loophole, if caught driving for any reason other than business , ie school run, shopping , you could be nicked.
 
Check the law carefully. Just because other people are doing it doesn't mean you can't end up in trouble. There are loads of ex-pats here in Brittany running around in cars still on UK plates. They think it's OK because an insurance company has taken their money. But the law is quite clear that if you live here more than 6 months of the year then you have to register the car as French. You can bet your bottom dollar that the same insurance company who took their money will cry foul if they put in a claim. Perhaps not a problem if it's just a fender bender but if it's a multi-million pound claim..................
 
Many thanks. The whole thing seems a bit dodgy to me and would be only asking for trouble. I also think that it is risking a lot of money to save on road tax which is the whole problem anyway.

A 2000 LT car here is over 700 euro, in the UK about 300 Pounds, Crazy.
 
Take some comfort that, according to the latest Eurostat eport, overall the Irish pay the smallest percentage of their income in Tax in the whole of the EU. Paying that 700 euros may seem like a bummer but you get to laugh at the rest of us at the end of the day.

Just to clarify this a bit, the 'Loophole' is that the ID of the vehicle in the State is 100% invested in the chassis.(Not like the UK points system) What the guy in Tipperary does is take vintage (30yrs+) RRC chassis' and strip repair etc. then (in most cases) fit new D2 radius arm brackets, galvanise the whole lot and put a tidy D2 back on top. The reborn D2 is then registered as the original RRC on a ZV plate. Can obviously be done more easily with a D1. Your own D2 can be done for around €7k or he often has one in-build for €9 or €10k. I nearly went for it, but didn't quite have the cash at the time. What it certainly isn't is a paperwork swap.

Hi Chris, you will probably need a cert from the Garda - I did when I had new chassis and mine is vintage not classic; they are cracking down on stuff now. The Garda will inspect all VIN stamps/plates etc against vehicle history to see if they match the vehicle correctly, the tax office require original or a copy of this - depends on part of country. Cork wanted original.
