evening all, i came out of tescos on xmas eve and my td4 wouldn't start.got a few mates to push and off it went.no trouble since , until last friday,i parked in a multi storey, refused again. called the aa, first one arrived in a high top van and couldn't drive into carpark. he gave it a few turns and informed me my pump was dead,he called for a smaller van to tow me out.the second one arrived and said it wasn't the pump but 99% sure it was crank sensor. he gave me a tow and off it went. i ordered a crank sensor from L/R which i collected today.the wife took it out this morning and it cut out while she was driving, i towed it for 2 miles but it won't start.does anyone know if starter motor have to be removed to fit sensor, and does anyone think the first aa man was right and my fuel pump is gone.52 reg with 40,000 miles, i'd be greatful for any suggestions, thanks

A few mins on Testbook will soon tell you wether the low side fuel pressure is any good, crank sensors are not normally an issue on Td4's,(always time for a first tho)its usually the cam sensor that gives up.Trouble is the cam sensor only synchronizes the engine while starting, once it is going you can disconnect it - so obviously not what is wrong with your car.Its more likely to be a fuel related issue.

My TD4 did exactly the same a few months back - turned out it was the rear fuel pump - but mine had done over 70k

CRANK sensor can be fitted without removing the starter motor, it is a bitch or a job,, it will try your paitence

but if its not cranking , first look at the starter motor

hi john, starter is turning fine,i read in the haynes manual it had to be removed to fit the crank sensor, cheers

Yes,Testbook was the official diagnostic computer when your car was made, the other LR biased ones are Autologic and Rovacom.
Lots of other diagnostic tools struggle to communicate with LR products so its probably best just to look for a LR independant near to you.

Hi Paddy, if the starter motor is turning but the hippo wont fire up it may well be the cam sensor. When the engine warms up so does this sensor and then it locks open preventing the beast from starting, its a common fault. Had the same problem with mine only last week, the garage changed the sensor and it has worked perfect since (touch wood).

hi nick ,do you think it's worth while trying the crank sensor as i've already bough one from L/R, cheers p.

The way the garage explained it to me was that the cam sensor and crank sensor talk to each other. The cam sensor is used when starting (and thats all) and the crank sensor for something else. Apparently the likelyhood of the crank sensor going is very slim.

Like I said the cam sensor is a common fault, just do a search on here for poor starting or intermitent starting and the posts will come back with cam sensor.

It may be worth trying the crank sensor but I do believe it is a pain in the arse of a job to do.

Let me know what happens either way!

am i missing somehting here ?,,,why are you pushing it and towing it if the starter is ok

I am guessing that it is because it wont fire. The car turns over but wont start, at least that is what I am thinking.

I was told that a hippo would start off a bump if the cam sensor is fooked. Couldnt try it with mine as it is a auto.

hi john, the starter is turning , the car won't fire up.i've booked it into L/R for a diagnostic.thanks everyone for your advice,

paddy,,, i got confused with you saying you had to push it to start the engine ? and you got it started that way

can anyone confirm the cam sensor is out of circiuit on a bump start, seems odd if it is

I cant confirm it but the garage that done my warranty work had a Rover 75 in that was having the same problem and they told me they could get it started off a bump.
