Clutch gone without slipping

Just a bit of advice for those not aware.

The biting point on my clutch was near top of pedal travel just before xmas. With experience of other cars ive owned, i decide to wait till the clutch starts slipping then take it in for a replacement.

Yesterday i got in, tried to put it in reverse but it started grinding, so i put the clutch back down to the floor and re-selected the gear. when i release the clutch once more the pedal stayed down.

Called the AA, he had a look, apparently not only had the clutch suddenly gone without slipping first, but the slave cylinder or summat like that has exploded.

Had it towed to Mr Clutch Center in maidstone. They told me to come back tommorrow with £478.34. to replace the clutch, slave and master cylinder.

How about that 10 days into the new year....

hi this is viv,we have freelander td4 sport,having problems with no power going up some long fairly steep hills.we end up down into second gear.sometimes it will fly up the same hill but only rarely.on the flat or slight hills its like a bullet,no probs.we are taking it in at toyoto garage in ronda were we had to be towed in their 4 weeks ago.they replaced the fuel pump.no difference at all.this time he says could be clutch.mm.i think not.what do you think

losing power every now and then. try getting it rolling road tested see what that shows up first just in case.

You are wasting money with a garage that is not familiar with the product,find a LR garage - either independantor main dealer.Either will be cheaper than the Toyota garage using the "parts shotgun" rather than accurately diagnosing the problem - which sounds like a turbo overboost situation,which makes the engine ecu cut power to prevent engine damage.

just picked car up. got the price breakdown - 300quid for full clutch assembly fitted. that sound right to you guys. plus 150quid for the slave n master cylinders

good price Dave. . . .Harry you can always tell if the clutch is slipping revs will increase, might need adjustment and like Dave says if the pick up is very near top of pedal a good sign of wear or adjustment , its quite unusual for the clutch to go like Dave's but a combination of slave and wear could tip it. . . . .

Clutch flooring unexpectedly? I had that. I thought I might need a new clutch as well. Cause was the shaft seizing up. causing the bracket that holds the slave cylinder to bend and the slave to come off the mounting and explode. Quite a common occourance according to Autoparts, my sparts supplier. Towed the car to the local garage who sprayed release oil on it, left it overnight, followed by a blowtorch and freed off the shaft. Fitted a new bracket and master and slave assembly, job done. If the clutch wasn't slipping then it probably didn't need replacing. I was lucky, my local garage is as honest as they get. The prices of clutch and master cylinder assembly varies from around 50 quid to 200 and they are all exactly the same. It pays to shop around. There are a lot of rip-off merchants around, preying on peoples desparation.

97 diesel

replaced the hydraulics last month £50. now(tonight)no gears at all.Goes through all gears, but none engage. Hydraulics ok oh trapped mi finger!! any ideas please as im stuck in spain
