I have a very old wee digger.
When I make it work too hard, engine almost dies and CLOUDS of black smoke from exhaust.
Can a diesel guru tell me whats wrong please?
Pretty please?
And yes before the forum police appear, I know it is not a Range Rover nor even a Land Rover

Had a look at the air filter and it was pretty yukky so will replace that first.
Diesel is a bit grotty so may change fuel filter too

The hydraulic pressure relief is set wrong allowing the hydraulic pump to stall the engine. Pump still tries to keep the revs up so is pumping far too much diesel in for the engine speed.
It's either a case of the engine is weaker now so can't cope with the standard pressure or the relief valve is faulty/tampered with etc etc

Find the relief valve, back it right off. Get someone to operate one of the rams against a fixed stop (raising the dozer blade to full height works well)
Then slowly turn relief valve until engine revs drop by about 10% and it should sit there all day with no smoking.

Ah right ok that makes sense. I havent looked for PRV but I will.
The engine almost stalls but the machine doesnt go up the hill I want it to.
And its not a steep hill just a slope
If I adjust the relief valve will the machine not just sit there without smoking but without going up the hill too?

Ah, now, that sounds like one of the hydraulic motors is not working correctly.
You will still need the prv to be correct.
Is the track tension set correctly? Are the links worn? Sprockets worn?
If the engine is so weak that it's stalling due to weakness and you set the prv to that then yes, it won't make it up the hill but I doubt that's the case. The track motors need far less pressure than the rams.
Sounds like something is jamming up to me.
