Hi All

Yokohama Geolandar G012s A/T-S on my Range Rover are OK on snow and slush but struggle on ice and polished snow (= more ice). Recommendations for a good winter tyre please.

Size: 235 70 16

A/T means all terrain, S = sand? Snow?

As Ant already said any tyre will struggle on ice. Just stay off the ice. Unless you live somewhere that has proper winters, then you could buy studded tyres.

Loving my P38 in this weather, had to tow a couple of newish BMW's up a very slight inclining road on the school run on Monday morning.
Got to agree. To date have never had an issue with all year tyres, in the mild winters we get, but have managed hills that other drivers/ so called 4x4s have struggled with.If people would drive to the conditions and learn Ant's wisdom
Any tyre will struggle on ice - the laws of physics are unbreakable!!
It would make life a lot easier.

+1 - studded tyres are good, but they have their limitations too :( Drove on them in Swedish winters, as did most everyone else, but they are rather noisy, and I'm not sure of their legality in this country

IME, you need something fairly aggressive for driving on snow - I'm a fan of the BF Goodrich AT tyres - However, the best thing to do with an icy surface is keep away from it - Yeah I know, thank you Sherlock . It's better to drive much slower, or stay at home in the worst of the weather - we're snowed in at the mo, have been since Monday, and looks like we will be until Monday next week.... I could clear it, but it's blowing a gale, so not really worth it.

My winter tyres have SNOW written on them. General Grabber are fine. I had some Pirellli ones too once. I also had Vredstein which were grippy but noisy as hell.

Help! I'm snowed in :D:p:D

You don't need winter tyres in this country normal tyres are good enough. Just lower the pressures a little if driving on snow for the few days it's around.

Yes, I gave up swapping them over. Was slippy on the hills this evening though and wish I'd swapped them. Mind you, that's mainly because my current tyres are a little close to the legal limit and pretty much slicks.

I had a set of General Grabber TR's fitted around three years ago, largely because the tread pattern was very similar to the original Michelin's & I like to keep the old girl to original spec. where possible.
Not had snow down here since, at least until the recent falls & then there has not really been enough to make a 4x4 vital, I took my RRC out today to give it a run but our daily drive could have coped.
