Now that the novelty of continuous maintenance and repair of my Discovery 2 is wearing thin, I am toying with the idea of a Disco 3 (or 4 if I can afford it). My instincts are telling me this might be a very stupid idea, since everyone I know who has a Disco 3, have had to open a vein to pay the upkeep bills. So, I was wondering what you all think about your Discoveries 3 & 4 with regard to faults, maintenance, servicing, reliability, and running costs. Should I steer clear or am I being over concerned? Lifting the body off to fix things seems a bit of a put off to me.

An amazing vehicle, aim for a late D3 and buy the best you can afford, try and make sure timing belts have been done if they are close to time/mileage. Try and allow a bit of money aside for immediate repairs and be sure to go through it with a fine tooth comb,

@gstuart can tell you all about them as he is perpetually taking his to bits, he says it needs maintenance but I think he just likes to tinker :rolleyes:

owned mine just over a year and brought it as a project

have to ensure as @dieseldog69 has said ref the belts, also very important is the oil pump casing , ive done a buyers guide which should give u a rough idea in what to look for

dam it ive been sussed, lol , plus my new compressor turned up today so will soon have those parts stripped down ;),

plus , oil pump cover , a lot of reports ref these and they now do a modified one, was mainly from 2007 onwards , however they’ve been known to fail from 2005
 
It's pretty hard to find any used Landrover product owner who doesn't spend lots of time and/or folding stuff on the vehicle, particularly a used vehicle, from my experience, what you have experienced with your current vehicle you can expect more or less with the next one, I know I'll be howled down, but as a fellow Landy owner I know how much work my ownership of four over my lifetime has involved, and I am able to do all my own work, I have pretty much stopped using my current Disco, the only way to make sure it has no major problems. I am retired so it does give me something to do, occupational therapy if you like. And now I cannot afford to change vehicles.
If you want/need something to do in your spare time and spend money on, then buy another Landy, if you want a vehicle to use everyday that just keeps going pretty well trouble free buy a Toyota Landcruiser.
Just my opinion.
 
A mate seems to be having his D3 V8 repaired every other month. Wheel bearings, wishbones, bushes, etc., and repeat failures! He has his mate, a professional mechanic, do his work for him. His brother-in-law has one too, and spends an absolute fortune on it; always somethin wrong. Another acquaintance does nothing but say how much he regrets buying his TDV6.
Havings said all that, I do quite fancy one! Lol

Yes a Landy is the vehicle you would buy with your heart, the Toyota is a vehicle you buy with your head, but I understand Toyotas are expensive to own there in Britain, here, they are like bums, (everybody has one). But there is no disputing the Tojo is best in reliability stakes, no matter where in the world you are.
