will be buying a couple of 58 plate discoverys engines are shot so 1 for breaking the other 1
i was thinking of putting a 300 tdi in i am looking to see if anyone could work out wireing for them if its possible
am not interested in putting v6 deisel back in before people start saying

Pizz off, I can do nothing more than applaud you :cool::cool::cool:

I have had a hankering for a long time now to get a scrapper and fit her out on genuine coils and transplant a Cummins 6BT in there with an Eaton splitter box just for the craic.

Please do a build thread and make it picture heavy :):):)

think if an alternative engine could have been fitted in a D3 it would have been done by now, ;):D

Nah, what you are neglecting is the fact that a D3 is still too much money and overly complicated with linked systems for the types that do stuff like engine swaps to bother with, than the expense side of them, a D3 with blown engine/box can still fetch good money as the Chelsea tratter market for good secondhand parts is strong for these days as folk try to keep up with the Jones's.

Me personally, I rip out all the sh!t and give it a pull stop lol

In this life there are limiting factors, time, money and imagination, you can have 2/3 at any one time but you'll never have all three :(

indeed they can become a serious money pit, recon engine is 5k

they do seem to be keeping there value at the moment , don’t know if it’s because newer and even more complex models are being launched that’s allowing the D3s to hold there value better,

currently for a half decent one they're around 7k, have seen quite a few being sold around the 100-105,000 miles due to the cam belts , allowing roughly 1k for that lot to be replaced

also ur right , even sold for spares can get a good return

even a blown brake light bulb can throw all sorts of errors up, sometimes reminds me of complicated heating systems when i use-to fault find them and seeking that broken link, be it a sensor or wire.

however these discos have in excess of 20x ecus

One of the main reasons Defenders kept selling was the nostalgia and illusion of an uncomplex vehicle, later ones couldn't be further from the truth!

I think the main reason D3s on the whole have not been molested is their complexity and cost of the base vehicle, the relative and readily available abundance of D1s&2s with unloved series & Defs still floating around means there is little motivation to bother.

Maybe one day I will get my chance to tackle an unloved D3?

We'll see, but watching this for progress like a hawk!

agreed, as this was my first disco i thought it better to just get a base model, so thought it would at least reduce it down as much as possible

indeed bought mine as a project and has been a steep learning curve but in all fairness , enjoy doing it up and fingers crossed will have a half decent landy at the end of it

but know without a diagnostic reader i wouldn’t have stood a chance with some of the faults i had to trace

will be very interesting as u say ref , engine , in this thread ;):D
 
Beside all other odds from pure electronic point of view it's very complicated to addapt other kind of engine to a CAN-Bus vehicle as to retain all it's enhancements, i dont see the benefits to bastardise a well equipped D3 or 4 with a rudimentary engine cos all you'll keep is it's look from outside nothing will work well on it, a D2 is completeley different story and you can put what engine you want in it and maintain it's systems too.

I am still wondering what the original engine was supposed to be as development started under BMW before Ford took over.

The engines used in the Discovery 3 were all taken from Land Rover's sister company at the time, Jaguar. A Ford/PSA-developed 2.7-litre, 195 hp (145 kW), 440 Nm V6diesel engine (the TdV6) was intended to be the biggest seller in Europe.


In 1990 Ford acquired Jaguar Cars and it remained in their ownership, joined in 2000 by Land Rover, till 2008. Ford then sold both Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata Motors. Tata created Jaguar Land Rover as a subsidiary holding company. At operating company level, in 2013 Jaguar Cars was merged with Land Rover to form Jaguar Land Rover Limited as the single design, manufacture, sales company and brand owner for both Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles.
