So my delightful :D freelander has developed a noises when I change gear it's like a clunk mixed with abit of scraping. Also when I corner a bit hard it makes more of a machine gun clunk. I've been under this morning and pretended I know what I am looking for. A couple questions how much movement should be in the rear diff mounts? And if i pull down on the prop near the vcu it the bearings rubber will allow this to make a bang. Could this be my problem? Any help would be appreciated

I've just read over your Intro 'Newbie' thread - sorry I missed it last week.

It does sound like you need to renew the VCU or remove the prop shafts until you replace it. Bell Engineering are a great place to get a recon VCU from.

Before you take it off though it would be good to do a "1 wheel up test" to confirm the VCU is shot and also check your tyres. Have a read through this post...

tbh - if your car is making those noises already due to the VCU or tyres, there is a good chance other bits of the transmission may be near failure. Before spending to much cash on it, it may be worth changing the oil in the IRD - if the old oil comes out looking like oil, you're probably good - but if it comes out greyish, then that is the bearings ground to a pulp and suspended in the oil. Its a good test as to the health of the transmission.

I'll stick a response on your newbie thread answering some points raised there :)

Sorry I know this doesn't help much but my Freelander does the same with the vcu bearings my understanding is the rubber mounts in the bearings have failed/perished what ever you want to call it and need to be replaced. That is a good place to start as regards the rear diff mounts sorry I can not help you there I am sure some one with far more knowledge will be able to help let us know how you get on

The VCU support bearings can go, as can the mounts for the rear diff - specifically the front one of the 3 mounts, the 2 back ones are usually fine.

However, although they can go just through normal wear and tear - they will often be forced into failure by a VCU that has become to tight or tyres that are mismatched - both cause excessive wind-up in the transmission. So if you replace them and the VCU or tyres need addressing - you will likely destroy you new mounts as well as other, more expensive!, parts of the transmission.

So first thing to check is the VCU & tyres - that's 2 things :)

It should also be noted that you can get cheap support bearings and diff mounts - but they will fail an awful lot quicker than decent parts - like a couple of weeks!

Cheers for your reply
I was planning to take off the prop today just waiting for the torque socket to turn up. Do you know what oil goes in the ird ?

I should do - but I can never remember what type of oil to put in the engine - so have no hope on the IRD :)

I just search on here to find what oils to put in my Freelander ..... if someone with better memory doesn't respond before you get round to it !

I've checked the tyres they are all identical and pretty much brand new. I have got them at 31psi at the moment due to towing. The front rcu bearing looks like it's been on the car since new the rear one looks pretty new. I will have a go at the one wheel test and go from there I think.

Tried to get the prop off and the bolts are seized grrrr left them in gt40 see if that will help. Also took this pic. Could this be my mysterious noise?
