Tyre advice on size

If it's anything like my Freelander, the speedo overheads by 5mph anyway. I'm thinking of fitting bigger tyres/wheels to mine to compensates for the speedo. Mine are currently 255 70 17.

Are you sure they are 255 70 17"? With a 70 profile on 255 and 17" wheels they would be huge!

My 195/80R15s have a diameter of 27.3" - those would be 31.1".

Presumably you have something like 30mm+ spacers as well.
I don't know about that, I only bought it less than 2 weeks ago and haven't had the wheels off yet myself. I did take it to to my local tyre fitter for 4 new tyres and I didn't see any spacers when they had the wheels off.

Trying to find out before I buy them tomoz

They won't fit without spacers and a lift.
The maximum width with most tyres is 225 section. The maximum diameter needs to be under 29" or the tyres hit the spring cups. A 225/70/16 will fit, giving very little room around the strut area.
A 245/70/16 are around 30" in diameter and so will hit the strut. ;)

No, you are quite right, they are 255 55 17 my mistake. Probably wishful thinking.

I expect they are 225 not 255. 255 section tyres won't fit on the standard ET46 rims without spacing them away from the strut.
225/55/17 is the factory 17" wheel size. ;)

I run with 225/60/17 AT tyres that have rim protection. These give 8mm clearance with the strut and 8mm clearance at the spring cup. My speedo over reads by 5% with that tyre size.

I'll check again when I'm with the car later but I'm fairly sure they are 255. Although, numbers have never been my strong point, I can't even remember my phone number.

ThIs is all very useful: 225 is the widest you can go on standard wheels and wheel offset. 29" the maximum diameter without a lift.

17" rims: 225/70/17
16" rims: 225/ ? /16
15" rims: 225/ ? /15

Can anyone fill in the blanks? I reckon probably 70-80 section?

The maximum diameter needs to be under 29". Tyres vary in diameter, even if the size printed on the sidewalls are the same. This means large tyres need to be tried on the car.
As a rule, the following should fit OK.
225/65/17, depending on tread design. Some tyres with rim protectors and flat tread do hit the spring cups.
225/70/16 again fit, but some tyres can foul the spring cup.
225/75/15 fit fine. 225/80/15 can be squeezed in with some tyre types.
