i have been trying to sort this out for over a week , just about run out of ideas .....Help
its a 2001 150k miles,1 dont have any codes as reader wont work on this year

it always starts and idles fine, if i drive slowly and dont accelerate to fast i can get to about 40 mph , but if i accelerate hard the Eml comes on and it gets a bit smokey, sometimes the engine cuts out, it always restarts and Eml clears.

i have changed turbo hoses, turbo control valve, vacuum lines, under bonnet fuel pump, checked intank fuel pump, checked fuel outlet to hp pump, changed fuel rail sensor, map sensor, replaced maf sensor,
i have ordered a wiring harness for the fuel sensor and an intank fuel pump

i was going to replace the hp fuel control valve from a spare fuel pump i have but when i got if off it was a different type
do you guys think its worth swapping out the hp pump ? or can you point me to something else,

john t

It's not that pesky "o" ring in the hp pump that gets raved about on here is it?

I bet it might be, regulator O-rings split change out for about £5

Also check the low fuel pressure sensor plug wiring, squirt a bit of electric contact cleaner on the plug and into the connector and push and pull off the plug a few time, do the same with the under bonnet fuel pump connector

freelance , i did take the fuel regulator off the hp pump the o ring looked good, was planning to swap the regulator with another but it was slightly different, just my luck so tomorrow im planning to swap out the hp pump complete, not sure what sort of job it is but i do have the shaft retaining tool so im guessing a few hrs, its when you get faults these that makes me think its time to get rid of it

arctic im starting to think its the regulator although the o ring looked ok, i have no way of testing it, may link out the low pressure sensor just to eliminate it , although the fuel filter has just been replaced and the connector been on and off a few times,

Hi John
Even though the O-rings look ok they can still be weak and leak a little, and for the cost of £5 worth changing, before going to all the trouble to remove the whole HPFP as you say tool required, and engine as to be jack up after top engine mount removed & lower engine mount, you will also need a 17mm Allen key to get the blanking cap off to use the tool, starter motor would need removing either way, a couple of hours work opposed to about 40 minutes to change the O-rings good look

agree arctic im in two minds what to do i can see its a lot of work replacing the pump i have the shaft retaining tool ,or just wait a few days to have new o rings delivered simple job to replace the o rings, car not much use when it only gets to 30mph better check i have a 17mm allen key that might be the decider, thanks for your input,

update, today i replaced a few items
fuel regulator o ring replaced
fuel rail sensor harness replaced
in tank fuel pump replaced
took it for a test drive , still no power will drive happily as long as i dont accelerate too quickly i can get to about 35 -40 mph before eml comes on ? any ideas anyone
im thinking the LP sensor on the Fuel filter is next, is there a way of testing this ?

i did another test, disconnected the maf and the map, started the engine tickover is good, if i rev it to the red line the eml comes on not sure what this is telling me ?

Is the turbo boosting? Sounds like it might have stopped spinning to me. The symptoms are like a complete turbo failure.

hi nodge, i tested the turbo a few days ago, replaced the boost control and the vacuum pipes, tested the turbo by putting the vac hose directly to the actuator, turbo spins great.
if i drive slowly up to say max 35mph if will be fine but any faster the eml will come on and sometimes the engine will just cut out, it always restarts and idles fine,

i have ordered an LP fuel sensor the one on the fuel filter housing ,will also check out the wiring to all sensors any other input is welcome

Nodge i fitted the rail overlay harness yesterday but still the same problem exists, and i seem to have gained another problem now the cooling fans start up on switch on and keep running flat out, im also getting an intermittent chattering on engine management relay R4, if i pull R4 relay the fans stop ?
for a few months i have had suspicions about the glow plug relay as the glow light was flickering on start up then never came on for weeks , now it seems to be operating normally, im thinking of pulling the wiring on the engine block where the glow plugs and engine temp sensor are located, any ideas ?

Cooling fans running when cold would suggest a problem with the temp sensor.
You could well have a bad connection in the fuse box or engine bay grounding point.
It's possible worthwhile re-seating the EDC multi-plugs.

Hi John T, The fans coming on - You've fitted the overlay harness which means you've not seated the multi-plug correctly. The lever on the plug must be as close to horizontal as possible then insert the plug ensuring the latch mechanism enters the hole in the base and pulls the plug down as the lever moves toward vertical and clicks into place. No more spinning fans.

hi i have checked the plugs and all seem to be correct, the fans running is the least of my problems, as they have never cut in in 12 years of ownership so for the moment the fans have been unplugged, im still getting the relay chatter could it be a poor earth somewhere ?
going back to the lack of power and eml coming on, i did an injector leak off test and found no 1 to be leaking about 1/2 ltr a min quite a lot i guess ?all the others only a dribble, only problem is i tried to replace the injectors 6 months ago but couldnt get no 1 out, so will have to try extra hard tomorrow

update, she is sorted now and engine running well, the no1 injector leaking back to much was causing the issue, injector took a bit of persuasion to come out, lots of wd40 and diesel overnight and tapping the injector for 20 mins with a small hammer and punch, then slide hammed and out it came ,
need to look at the temperature sensor now might be wiring or sensor ?
thanks for all the input
