Hi guys
Please can anyone tell me which bonnet a 1970 S2a facelift should have mines got the S3 delux bonnet but the front panel had the S3 grill fitted but the fittings are there for the cross mesh type grill so I am not sure, what do you think

Hi Graham

I've just had a look in the James Taylor Series 3 spec guide. I know yours isn't a S3 but reading this I think the correct type is probably the blade edge:

Quote:

"There were three types of standard bonnet panel. the standard or 'blade' type was used on all 88s except station wagons. The deluxe type has a rolled leading edge and dished centre and was fitted to all 109s and to 88 station wagons.
In the Uk the truck cab models came as standard with the spare mounted on the bonnet by 1982. The underside of the bonnet panel was normally unpainted but the central strengthening ribs wee finished in black"

Based on the above, with your model year I reckon a blade bonnet was most likely to have been correct

Well its that time of year for bonnets...............

The other thing that I have been thinking about is that the 2a is in Limestone and the Delux bonnet that was fitted was rubbed down to the bare ally but everything else is in Limestone which makes me think it's been changed

Hi rattler, if your bonnet has 3 bolt hinges then its from a series 3 Two's had 4 bolts. I believe that limestone was not a colour applied to 2a's However there was a similar colour just called light green but not many were so painted. Most produced were the bronze green followed by the blue and grey. Light green and beige ones were few and far between.

That's given me the answer to this which I've puzzled about for many years and what you say corroborates the various landys I've had including my current swb station wagon which has a deluxe bonnet. I thought it was simply evolution of the design.

Yeah the hinges was interchangeable with both bonnet types, didn't know about the limestone colour not being used as a full colour on 2a's I know it was on S3's, it's original colour was Bronze green but when we bought it it was painted in Limestone I do like both colours and have had one in Bronze green so I have decided on staying with the limestone colour plus with it having the S3 front I shouldn't look out of place

It may be the 2a light green and 3 limestone are the same thing, the colour only been given that name later.
Only ever seen a couple of light green 2a's and they looked much the same as my limestone 3.However all were well faded with age.

Don't think so as they are two completely different colours and I have never heard the term light green before for limestone as all series landys had limestone roofs and sides so i don't know how a light green and limestone landy would look :)
