Hummmmm well I have been there so can sympathise some. Get it jacked up and put it on stands, Take the under tray off and have a good look. Take photos (in daylight) so we can all have a look. Put water into the rad and see where it is leaking from.

awesome il try get it of tonight, the mechanic said It could of been the fans which are always on if one doesn't work it will compensate by ditching steam I didn't think it would ditch this much fluid so quick

You mechanic is talking bollox.
If the fans are on when the engine is cold. Either the AC is on (heater control pointing to a screen setting).
Or the engine ECU thinks the engine is hot. What is the gauge showing when the fan is on?

showing fine no warning lights apart from the decent one even when the water went no warning lights. I thought the mechanic was speaking a load of s@@t

Sounds as though the water leak is from the inlet manifold side of the engine, which opens the possibility that this is the inlet manifold gasket - which can and do fail (particularly on early cars - but the FL1 generally would have got the later, more reliable gasket). Unusual for the thermostat to leak - but basically, you will need to get a mirror and look hard to find the leak.

Big water leaks from the engine are usually in two common spots: the water pump (will drip down from the offside (driver's side) of the engine, but thanks to the under tray, the water will emerge at the back and rear) or the head gasket above the alternator. Again, thanks to that under tray, the water will emerge near the back.

Be careful and avoid driving the car too much: if the head gasket hasn't yet gone, there is a risk that driving it with this severe a water leak will lead to it failing.

Have you checked the oil yet? Does it look like old oil (black) or pale and creamy (emulsified oil and water - a pathognomonic sign of head gasket failure)

Ten points.. left side under the belts dreanched under tray and upper pipes showing the water elsewhere reason we didnt exspect it the pump is 10 months old :( from a garage/land rover specialised.

Any idea how much one is? And a good strong make thats wont pop hopefully someone knows a good mechanic for freelanders in surrey

Thank you :)

Fitted a new one to mine recently - can't remember what I paid, but it wasn't big bucks. The annoying thing is that you'll need to lock the cam sprockets and crank, but other than that, it isn't too difficult to DIY. :)

You say it has a "rock slider", then you say it has a "mud slider" - are these down the sides of the car or under the engine? If its under the engine, that's just a standard part of the car. I'm not sure its its to stop damage to the engine, catch oil drops or just pi$$ owners off when they come to service the cars.

Whether its under the engine or down the side, there's no real indication that the car has been abused off road - unless you can see obvious signs of abuse to it.

The HDC light is probably a fault in the ABS/TC/HDC system rather than the thing being turned on all the time (there's 2 different lights for that anyway) - you need a code reader to find out what part has broke - you have the Teves Mk25 ABS system on that car. When you turn the ignition on, do ABS, TC & HDC lights come on and then the others go out leaving just the HDC? If the other lights don't come on, then the bulbs have been removed and you probably have the 3 Amigos not just 1 Amigo.

Regarding the leak - I believe you just need to find out where its leaking, slow leaks are often difficult to find as the coolant evaporates, with that much leakage, I'd have thought you could see traces of where its coming from.

As said - do not drive a 1.8 unless it has a good coolant levels - the HG can easily go in 10 miles with insufficient pressurised coolant.

Regarding the clunks - as said - various possible reasons inc the ARB bushes, drop links etc - probably one of them rather than damage - but always possible. You are fortunate... its only on 1 corner :)

Did you know of any of these problems when you bought the car?

No i didnt guys being really genuine his contacting lander rover and helped me find the leak tonight on the poxy water pump

The lights come on after i move only the decent light abs comes on after the handbreak used then goes its been sitting for months had its 100k service and rebuild about 19k ago

Im trying to find a good land rover repair place someone to trust with it

If the work was done at LR and the water pump was part of the job. Then it should have a warranty. I believe LR offer a 2 year parts warranty. So that's the first avenue to explore. Get them to diagnose the other faults at the same time;)

Do be careful, you could very quickly find yourself spending more than the cost of the vehicle if problems arise or left with a vehicle in bits if it becomes very expensive and the bills climb.

I would advise you trying first to find a "big brother" mentor who knows these and asking them for help. If there is anyone around you can ask. Someone who knows Freelanders.

Cheers

That will be a lot more difficult than fixing it yourself.

Good point. The only reason to use LR over OEM parts is for that guarantee - so good time to call in that warranty. Hope you have the documentation, rather than the word from the seller's mouth!

Another good point. If this has been leaking post or prior to sale (why was it laid up!) there is a very good chance the K Series engine, HG and/or head is toast. If these are OK, you still have a windscreen to fix and various other bits but hopefully just fix them and get on with driving it.
