Hi All, 2005 TD4 Sport, done 100 000 miles. In the last couple of weeks the car has used a lot of engine oil, much more than usual. There isn't an obvious leak, there is no sign of oil in the engine bay, the car is driving normally with usual power levels and no excessive smoke from the exhaust. I know the engine probably would use more oil in winter but not this much.
Is there any obvious explanation for the oil use? As there doesn't appear to be any other connected issues is the high use down to the age/mileage of the engine?
Cheers in advance
Rikky

Hi Mike, I topped up the oil a couple of weeks ago, to the right level on the dipstick near the max. Checked this morning and have just put another litre in and it's only just back to the right level, so around a litre in 2 weeks. Normal use driving around 200 miles. Thanks

Ok, well not to upset you too much, but mine uses virtually no oil between it's 6 monthly changes, 100ml would be about right, and it's done around 140,000 miles.

So you have a problem. You say there's no oil in the engine bay, but have you checked the engine guard? I doubt it would hold that much, but check it.
Take the turbo hoses off, and check there not full of oil, again doubtful.
Most likely you have an internal leak, and the oils burning off as you drive, you wouldn't notice this as it won't affect the engine yet, and the smoke wouldn't be visible, yet!.
@Nodge68 and @Diesel Do plus others are more practical in this aspect than me, they'll be along later.
I'm going to say it's a leaky injector seal, but wait for more answers.

Mike

Mine has used nothing in 5,000 miles, which is about right for a TD4 with 116,000 on the clock.
Is your PCV valve stuck open. When was the crank case filter last changed? It should be changed when the oil is;)

I'll be taking it to the local garage tomorrow I think - the guy is ex Landy so knows what he's talking about. Crank case filter will be done too. Thanks all

What goes in must come out....

Mrs Kayos had a problem with her Corsa, as we don't live together I only heard it from her but it was the oil pressure switch, she put 5 litres in one week as it was just pumping back out

Would check the pipes ASAP. If the seals in the turbo have gone and oil is getting past it could lead to a runaway engine.

That is a lot of oil to use in a short amount of time.

Have you had anyone following you whilst driving to look for smoke?

I wanted to update this thread as the problem was solved. Turned out the seal on the oil filter had gone and that was the cause of the excessive oil use. Have replaced filter and seal and using normal amount of oil now ie, hardly any! Thanks for all the advice. Cheers

You'll have seen the oil running down the filter housing? Did you get the crankcase filter changed? That is were I'd be looking first.
Glad it's stopped using oil now.

Thanks - there wasn't that much visible oil to be fair as it was at the back of the filter........but yes, definitely this was the issue. Also crankcase filter done as seems that was also necessary..........cheers again
