Their OK then ! So it's got to be the Lift pump IF your fuel filter ain't full ! & its pulling AIR FIRST before fuel !

but once the filter is full and I use the pump it will push fuel up out threw the bleed screw

All our 200 and 300TDi's will fire up instantly, without using the glow plugs- it's a characteristic of a direct-injected diesel engine I think. The old 19J's.. now they really did rely on their glows!
When were the valve clearances last checked?

Ermmm I wouldn't know it's a 1995 model had 11 owners on 212000 miles

If it (eventually) starts with a cloud of white smoke, that says to me that plenty of fuel is getting through but there isn't the heat to ignite it. As above, the glows provide pre-heat but I've never known a 300Tdi to not start when they're faulty. That leaves compression. If the valves have receded a bit and closed the clearances up, you'll have insufficient compression (which provides the heat to burn the fuel) and hence, start straight away.
Well worth checking the valve clearances, it will take someone experienced 10 minutes.

+1. a 200/300 TDi, in good order, should start more or less instantly without glow plugs in all but the very coldest weather.
Your fuel filter should be full - as it feed in AND out at the top, its probably got an air leak in the system. a bit of clear pipe in the output pipe from the LP should show it up

Right you could TRY this !! BUT wait while Disco 1 BFG confirms !
IT will take 2 of you !
KEY in ignition ! NOT TURNED ON !
JUMP LEAD ON + of BATTERY ! touch OTHER END OF JUMP LEAD TO No2 GLO PLUG & count to 8 ! jump lead OFF TURN ignition key to TURN MOTOR OVER !
Doz it START UP straight away ? if it duz then it's the glo plug RELAY that's KNACKER

I changed my fuel leak of pips earlier today some were a bit nakerd but will try and start it in the morning as was still hot when changed them so it would of started first time any way

from the factory they do but it has been known for people to remove them to fit in a series etc
