Improved MPG

Hi all,
Just want to share with you the following re my 53 Serengeti TD4 AUTO with 138k miles.
Within the last few months I have fitted an EGR Blanking Kit and also fitted a Gates Inline thermostat(Pig of a job on the AUTO) and the MPG has gone from the low 20s MPG to at least 30MPG and most of these were short trips of no more than 5-10 miles, and this in an Automatic!!!
I have a couple of hundred mile each way round trip coming up soon so it will be interesting to see what MPG I get on that trip. Will let you know.
Is the answer conclusive that both of these fittings increase MPG? Well it certainly looks as if they do.

The thermostat will be responsible for most of the improvement. My own SE auto now returns 29.7 Mpg on my Cornish road commute. Before doing the thermostat mod, I was seeing under 24 Mpg. So making the engine run at the correct temperature, makes a massive difference.

Totally agree with you Nodge68 and there"s also the benefit of boiling Hot water running through the Heater, very handy later on this week when the weather men tell us it"s going to get really cold.

Jeez. I'm sure my TD4 Is doing a bit more than the figures your getting. Does auto make a difference?

£55.00 of fuel returns 320 miles at £1.08 a ltr. Don't know how that converts to old money.

My guess is about 30-35 to a Gallon ? Any clever Bod's know how to do the numbers.

That mileage and that price equates to approx 26 MPG.
I think I"ve got my maths right..

I can get up to 550 miles per full tank in my 06 TD4.
EGR blanked and a Ronbox on setting 7, switch at middle setting.

I have recently done the thermostat mod and I know it's early days, but it seems that I am doing less miles.
I shall keep an eye on it.

I make it about 28 so agree with Mudinuri your not getting as much.

28.54Mpg to be exact. My TD4 auto has done 29.2Mpg tested over 4,000 miles. It has a Synergy 2 set on 8 or 9 with the MAF compensation on.

'ronbox' just be a nickname for the 'synergy' tuning modules ..

a weak maf signal ..

How do you do that? I know I don't drive economically, but that's a huge difference.

It is amazing being in a country where the speed limit is 100kmh/60mph and the police enforce it strictly. It saves loads in fuel and although it felt really strange driving at those speeds initially, you just get used to it.

It would be difficult though driving at 60 when everyone else around you is going lots faster!

Owning the car from virtually new helps, I know every quirk on mine and all its service history. It's well loved.
But mainly:
Good oil at correct level
Maintain the cooling system
USE DECENT FUEL, not supermarket crap
Road biased tyres, at 30psi checked weekly
Clean air filter every month

And i do drive sensibly most of the time, but get me on the back roads and i give it a good boot

But the main thing I've noticed. The more miles the car does, the more the mpg goes up. Upto 50,000 miles 28-30mpg, Up to 100,000 mile's I averaged 32-34mpg. And it's still creeping up!!!

Not currently, been off since early this year. I've sorted the electrical problem, but I'm still undecided as to putting it back on. It's driving really nice without, and it's only when you really boot it that you notice it's not there.
